Hello all,
I've recently discovered the DMB podcast as I near DM'ing again for the first time in several years, and I've been binge listening on my way to and from work, and occasionally at work. I figured it was time to sign up and take full advantage of the community here.
About me: I'm Tim. I'm a 35 year old geologist in Houston, Tx. I grew up in West Virginia, so I'm a bit of a hillbilly with a healthy dose of dork. I have a wide range of interests, and tend to attack hobbies with a crash and burn mentality. D&D has remained a consistent passion throughout all of that.
D&D background: I started playing in high school, so I've been playing fairly heavily (but off and on) since 2nd edition. Looking bad at my old groups I realize just how dysfunctional we were, but man we had fun and really that's all that matters. All nighters with nothing but cheese and Dr. Pepper, and DMs that started new campaigns on a monthly basis. In the early days I lacked any type of persistent campaign, but somehow I kept having fun and kept playing. I started DM'ing myself pretty early on, but without a good mentor and being fairly young, I cringe at some of my early campaigns. I've had multiple groups since then, and moved several times. I joined up with a guy in Flagstaff, AZ that was writing his own system, and spent about 2 years "alpha" testing the system. We basically rewrote the entire thing over the course of two years, and it was one of the most fun times I've ever had gaming. I think he still tweaking it here and there, but I'm waiting on that to finally release! I switched to Pathfinder once I realized how much Paizo cared about the game, and polishing their material. After Graduate school though I took a hiatus as I was moving and interning, and starting a new job. Now I've got a new group with people from work, and we've been cutting our teeth on 5th edition. 3 of our players are brand new, and 3 of us are experienced. I'm starting our first semi-sandbox home brewed, non-boxed, campaign this coming Tuesday. So far we've run a D&D boxed set, and had one guy run Thule.
Okay I need a few lists. I'll use DM Chris's lists since I'm not sure I can answer the movies on DM Mitch's list.
Top 5 books (sort of in order):
1) Words of Radiance (Stormlight Archives)
2) The Name of the Wind
3) The Lies of Locke Lamora
4) Ender's Game
5) GoT series
Top 5 foods
1) Enchiladas
2) Lasagna
3) Tacos
4) A good pot roast
5) Pound Cake
Top 5 places I've visited
1) Argentina
2) County Clare, Ireland
3) Bilbao, Spain
4) Glacier National Park
5) Cranberry Glades in good ole West Virginia
Crap, Chris has movies too. Okay I can do this, but not in particular order!
1) Shawshank Redemption
2) Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels
3) American History X
4) Avengers
5) LOTR trilogy
That's my rambling. I'm pretty open so feel free to ask me anything.
