Wow! I am continually Suprised at how many different 4e supplements there are. I love the artwork in 4e. And is that a beholder on the end of a worm body?

And is that a beholder on the end of a worm body? It is like a cyclopes crab lol. Too bad... still what if a beholder found a body it could use? Creepy. These supplements are pretty cool. And (another pointless question) what are flying those "space ships" (why are there spaceships?) they look like some elf/Orc hybrid...

That would a githyanki. Made famous, imo, from the 2nd ed campaign setting of Spelljammer. Pirate era ships flying through space. Pretty cool stuff.

As far as I know, the Gith (Githyanki & Githzerai) we introduced in the original Fiend Folio. They were enslaved by the Illithids, and after breaking their bonds, took up residence in the floating corpse of a dead God in the Astral Plane. They were a playable race in the Planescape setting. I never played Spelljammer, so I don't know their role in that setting. There's an article on Tribality with a 5e conversion for the Gith. I'll try to link it tonight. Edit: tribality.com/2015/03/02/richs-gameroom-the-infamous-gith-bonus-the-way-of-zerthimon/Article by the Illustrious Rich Howard (Umbralwalker).

They did indeed first show up in the Fiend Folio, and we're apparently borrowed/inspired by something George R. R. Martin wrote. The Spelljammer setting had the illithis and gith rivalry prominent, and introduced Gith Pirates as the big bad to watch out for. Their ships were awesome looking. They are another of the races that has made it into every edition so far.

I don't read much of George Martin, but I'm pretty sure they come from his sci-fi novel, Dying of the Light (which explains why the name was familiar). So are these creatures essentially in space?

I haven't read them yet but i think it is just part of the Astral Plane. Just another realm.
