I had this lightbulb as I was at a "retreat" for the week. I began a campaign with a group of random people who have, most interesting, decided to try D&D. I also had the idea, because I never use Miniatures on a board and nobody else who played, did either. For each player who is consistent in the campaign (more or less), until the end, I will paint a miniature for them that is an equivalent to their character and mail it to them (I have a lot practice in miniature painting thanks to Warhammer and besides that, I just enjoy painting these). Does anyone think this is a good idea (obviously, not if you already use miniatures in games) or would it just be considered ridiculous?

I think that having a miniature that is truly yours and represents your character in a tangible way creates a certain level of investment. It makes even more sense to reward investment with the miniature and the fact that you are personally painting them takes it to the next level. I have a player that currently does that for the other players at the table and they seem to love it.

Go for it, I'd be thrilled if my DM did this for me.

Go for it, I'd be thrilled if my DM did this for me. The question is now: 1. Should I wait till after the campaign to tell them, or 2. Tell them beforehand to enact the 'bribe' part?

I guess it depends on what you're trying to accomplish, a pleasant surprise gift, or motivation to keep playing.
Personally, I'd let everyone know what I was planning ahead of time. Someone might get the notion to buy and paint one himself, and begin a mini-painting hobby of his own. For everyone else, I would court input on which mini and color schemes they prefer, and provide links to Reaper minis and Heroforge with instructions to ship to my address if they find something perfect they want me to paint. For everyone else else, I would tell them I'll do my best to match a mini from my own collection and make it happen with their preferred colors.
Of course, that ruins the surprise completely. Also, I know you're exaggerating the bribery part, but the promise of a hand-painted mini isn't going to be what keeps a person coming back to the game.

Certainly I am just exaggerating, they are all pretty certain they want to keep playing. I just making sure that telling them now was the best idea and you brought up some very good points. I was planning on keeping it a suprise, but after chatting about Games Workshop I realize that might not be the best course of action with this group. I am not banking their participation on these figurines, just thought it would be a fun piece of the story to "immortilize" for them.

Great idea! To begin, perhaps you give them a cool token of some sort and once they hit a certain level... achieve something worth celebrating... then give them the painted mini in a simple yet memorable mini award ceremony. Raised swords.... flowers.... cheering crowds etc.

The pull of the promise of a hand-painted miniature will prove too much for their gullible minds
