I am a first time DM, taking it pretty lax on rules tbh, knowing that will come as I encounter them. Here is my take on a mixture of Chris’ Phoenix character, mixed with the Phoenix Keith Baker was talking about. I have been having trouble getting my players to ‘pick up’ a longer-term npc; as a result, I’ve given this one a kinda dumb name, to see if that entices my players.
‘Phoenix’. Denis Staalis NG Each time they die, they are offered 3 new spells and 3 new cantrips, based on how they died. They can swap out up to 2 of their current spells and 1 cantrip. Gaining +1 spell and +1 cantrip memory capacity each death. Gains 1xD10HP per death. Each death, roll 1xD6, if a 6 is rolled, add one permanent Phoenix ability based on how they died- always a bonus action or reaction. Denis has seven deaths in total, has died once before, though can’t remember it too well. All he remembers is feeling scared but strong. He remembers waking in a clearing atop Mount Aderrun, ringed in felled trees, similar to a beaver dam (Phoenix nest). From there, he found civilisation, and followed a strong power to Saltmarsh. Denis can feel ‘old power’. He cannot quite tell what he feels, but a strong magic emanates from certain things/places/people. Denis confronts the party after they meet with Eda, saying he feels ‘old power’ on Strider. Insisting he must follow Strider/join the party to understand the power he feels from Strider, and either protect it, or protect others from it, should it come to that.
•1st death: He was fighting a sabertooth dire-hedgehog, and died by impalement.

-(as main action ) Dematerialises their weapon to touch the ground, a (5ft area) within 25ft of caster receives 1xD8 piercing dmg. Leaves one foreign shard in each target
-(as main action) touches their heart, lifting their hands away aflame. Each foreign shard within 40ft burns a white flame, causing 1xD6 dmg, const14 saving throw, if failed, target is aflame, taking 1xD4 fire dmg each turn for 2 turns, or until successful saving throw.
Keen for thoughts on other ways to encourage your players to pick up an npc. Also thoughts on balancing. Also, is it some scumbag **** to make a class that pretty much gives me exact control of what they can do, and then play it myself? Lol
Thanks in advance
