1. What are the first warning signs? (These probably go unnoticed by the uninitiated, but their significance becomes clear later)
You are in a field of Shamrocks, the wind is soft carrying soft laughter upon it from farther into the field. Dragon flies, lady bugs, grasshoppers, and other such creatures roam freely through the field.
2. What events make it clear something is afoot? The whole party rolls dex saves, whoever gets he lowest hears a soft crunch under their foot when they take their next step. Looking beneath your foot lies the crumpled body of a tiny sprite.
3. What is the correct protocol for avoiding trouble?Give the player a 5 seconds to answer:
“under your foot you see the crumpled body of a tiny creature, it looks like a mix between an insect, a flower, and a tiny person. What do you do?”
DM counts to self: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5
One of the dragonflies flies straight up to you, as it comes within focus you see it appears to be the same sort of creature, a … make a nature check.”
A. If the player did not answer anything in the 5 seconds,
1. They are caught red handed and the sprites swarm them, all gasping in horror, making outrageous accusations, and pointing fingers. Fairy court ensues.
2. Fairy court: the whole party must answer questions about the murder inside a ring of truth. The party must try to make it sound like they are innocent without actually lying.
3. This can be done with a series of cleverly worded and misleading answers of which a Paladin would not approve, or less cleverly worded answers backed by varying levels of Persuasion checks . Any attempts to
bluff will result in a very incriminating series of stammers and dropped words. Likewise, intimidation checks will be equally incriminating as it makes you look like a violent brute which they already think you are.
B. If the player answered quickly they hide the body, or dispose of it in some other way that is not obvious or time consuming;
1. They are questioned by the sprite: what are you doing here?, where are you going? Who are you? Have you seen Kame? Etc …
2. If the PC’s are able to bluff their way through the questions that would otherwise make them appear as guilty as they are, they get away with murder.
4. What kind of trouble ensues otherwise?• If one of the PC’s is found guilty, the Sprites fly up slowly and begin flying clockwise while chanting in unison. The breeze picks up as shamrocks and dandelion fluff fill the air, the light takes on an orange tint like that of a sunset. Then they fly off.
• The PC found guilty (whether it is the guilty PC or not) must make a charisma saving throw DC 10 every sunset, if they fail they roll a % dice.
• Each failure their skin turns into tiny crimson scales, cumulative to 100%. The change starts on the toes of a foot of their choice. Once they are covered 100%, the next failed Cha save results in them being
true polymorphed into a fairy dragon. Int, wis, cha, and skills remain unchanged (so a bit different from the spell, but want to leave them "functional"), all other stats change to that of a fairy dragon.
5. How do they get out of the trouble?
They remain a fairy dragon until
remove curse is
cast upon them by one of fey ancestry. The curse cannot be removed until total transformation, it will however reset the % of scales to 0%.
6. What prize is there for navigating the situation successfully? You get away with murder! But if the PC’s must have more they become proficient with either persuasion or bluff, respectively.
7. You do you! AKA anything else?
This will hopefully be both fun and thought provoking for the players, but not too much fun because NPC lives matter. I would make the sprites comical, but a little intimidating and definitely passive aggressive; either way make the carrying out of the curse serious and grave.
