How low can you go?
This week's DMNastics exercise harkens back to DMB Episode 149: Low Fantasy with Calvin Johns, and is straight from the mind of the one and only Rorrick! We know that Low Fantasy games aren’t everyone's bag, so we're going to focus on a topic from the episode that is vital to low fantasy, and can add flavor and immersion to any world without going all in on realism.
For this week's exercise, let's practice rewarding the players with items whose mechanics are still in game terms, but whose names and history add spice to your setting.
Do one or more of the following (or multiples of the same):
1. Name a weapon and describe its history (e.g. +1 long sword=>Alemar’s Blade, known from the legend of Hemela as the sword carried by her sometimes companion: the scoundrel Alemar).
2. Pick a generic monster and give it a unique name and backstory.
3. Pick a spell that might be found as a scroll and flavor it as a unique creation.
4. Describe a character in a low fantasy world that the players can befriend to gain access to something they can't get any other way.
Let’s see how low you can go.

Edit: The link to the podcast episode.I'll definitely be back, but here's for a first go around. 1) King Avery's Bane: The tales of this elegant, mithril spear vary depending on who you hear it from and how honest they're being. Most people (History Check DC 10) will recall a spear matching its description from the story of King Avery's death, probably recognizing it the cause of his death. Those more familiar with local history (History Check DC 15) will know one of two versions, a) King Avery used the spear and fought too deep in the overconfidence it inspired in him and was thus slain (70%) OR b) King Avery was killed by an unknown warrior of the rebels he was fighting who wielded the spear and disappeared after the battle was over (30%). People especially trained in history on the topic (History Check DC 20) will have heard both versions and know that they are disputed, with both sides having strong evidence that the other story is false. Those with especially privileged knowledge (History Check DC 25) will have heard first hand accounts that King Avery was killed in battle while wielding the spear, which was made for him special on the eve of combat. He challenged the rebel leader especially but during the fight could not seem to land a blow. This dishonor was hidden. The true story, though, which is known by only a few (History Check DC 30), is that that Kord, god of war, was angry with King Avery for his handling of the rebellion and cursed his spear during its forging. King Avery had been told his spear would be cursed, and for that reason had the new, mithril one created. Not comprehending the true meaning of the curse, he went to battle with the new spear and was killed. (-3 Mithril Spear, but could the players appeal to Kord and lift the curse, restoring its true quality as granted by its workmanship, a +2 Mithril Spear?)
2) The Peat BeastA hill giant living in a swamp. Stories about him are false, calling him a monster made from the swamp. These stories come from his tendency to cover himself in moss for hunting purposes. 3) Heaven's WrathWritten elaborately on a scroll of fine Velum, the scroll describes in detail the fiery wrath of heaven upon the wicked. (Flame Strike)4) Brogan the ShoerThe cobbler and horse shoer living by the Timberford Bridge is rumored to be able to speak to animals, many travelers have reported hearing him muttering in the barn with his horse when they approach, certainly not a humanoid tongue. His skill with animals lends some credence to the rumors. He might be willing to teach those who treat him rightly.

1. Name a weapon and describe its history.
The Raven- An all black longbow that has a black beak attached to it, serving as a guide for pulling back arrows. This bow belonged to the ranger, ironically named Hunter, who would use it while tracking hunting and combat targets alike. Hunter was something of a vigilante in his town, and specialized in hunting predators and monsters outside of town, but was not shy to take out corrupt political figures and other villains to the common men of the town. The bow acts as a+1 longbow.
2. Pick a generic monster and give it a unique name and backstory.
The Curse of Lamplight
In the town of Lamplight, there is a curse that falls upon those who become the leader of this community. In the last year, there have been a dozen magistrates. Each begins to hear steps following them, see subtle movements, feel something watching them, following them. The paranoia consumes the politics, and as each leader slowly goes into madness, they all violently commit suicide within weeks. However, the curse is actually the work of an invisible stalker. When the "curse" began, the serving magistrate at the time, Sergio Maul, had become paranoid of any who were after his seat of power and called the invisible stalker to destroy those who would covet his ring, a memento that was passed from one leader to another. When the magistrate was impeached for his crimes derived from his madness, every leader who inherited the ring was hunted by the invisible stalker, while Maul rots in his jail cell.
3. Pick a spell that might be found as a scroll and flavor it as a unique creation.
A scroll which is found in a dungeon in the hand of a statue, the scroll itself contains the spell petrify. However, the spell is written in a way in which it is cast onto the user, turning them into the next statue holding the scroll for the next adventurer to find.
4. Describe a character in a low fantasy world that the players can befriend to gain access to something they can't get any other way. Lynda There is a speakeasy in town, the blind muskrat, which hosts both an exclusive club as well as the top of the line performers. Many come to this place to audition for Lynda. Lynda is a member of the Bard's College, and if the performer is good enough, they will gain her sponsorship into the college, where they can learn not only to refine their musical art but to harness the maximum potential of the power it carries and the hints of magic that subtly peek through to influence those not gifted or familiar with the art.

The invisible stalker curse is amazing! 3. Pick a spell that might be found as a scroll and flavor it as a unique creation.

Teschley is a scholar with more knowledge than most about the occult things of the world. He is consulted by kings and adventurers for his knowledge when strange things are afoot. When magical items are found, he usually sees them before anyone dares to use them, given how malicious the forces that created them in the past seem to have been. He has enough knowledge of the magic to modify malicious scrolls to be more useful and to transcribe some simple ones with a decent rate of success.

1. Seraph Blade. This shortsword was carried by the holy warrior Stout. It is said that demons cowered in sight of the blade allowing Stout to hold back the tide that would have overtaken the town of Kilkinney, allowing reinforcements to arrive. This acts as a +1 Shortsword that provides an additional Channel Divinity at each dawn. 2. Luxben is an orc sporting a huge gash down his arm. How'd he get it? Well by dueling the former horde chief for leadership. Th Chief had won the duel and after downing Luxben, took his scimitar and dug a deep gash into his sword arm to the point where it wouldn't heal properly. After being treated, Luxben, with his lame arm, sneaked into the chief's hut in the night and took his head. He used it as a symbol to show the the horde that even brute strength isn't enough to overcome a cripple using tact. Luxben took control of the horde from that point and renamed it to reflect their new ways, The Shadowreavers. 3. A scroll is found producing a faint light on a podium with a large stone block over top. the block itself has the same faint glow and if the scroll is pulled from the pedestal, the block falls in an attempt to crush the thief. But it the thief is lucky and retrieves the scroll for themselves, they can use the scroll to make themselves hover and float just as the stone block did(scroll of levitate). 4. Delany. A quiet fellow that works as a guard for the town of Jinnfolly. He currently is stationed at the guardhouse next to the main sewer entrance. He keeps a log of the city works employees that come and go and is the only one allowed a key for the entrance. sure some of the other workers have a key or two for the areas they work in but Delany holds the master key. Word has it that the other guards like to tease Delany for the one time one of the worker's wives came by on her husband's behalf and got him all red in cheeks, just with casual banter.

2) "The Lobster King" is a moniker given to a giant scorpion that lives near a stretch of desert coastline. The only people to have seen it are fishermen, and the closest thing they've ever seen to it are lobsters - thus, the Lobster King. The clay soil, lying a few meters beneath the sand, has given the scorpion's carapace a distinctly red hue as it prefers to dig under ground on too hot of days.
3) This scroll smells like it was left next to a fireplace for too long and reeks of smoke when unfurled. Once it is successfully read, it must be crumpled up and hurled at the enemy as part of the spell - catching fire in air and turning into the spark that unleashes a Fireball.

The Dragonspike
Each humanoid culture has an ancient legend about an age when dragons enslaved the creatures of the earth and were thought gods.
To the dwarves, it was Folst Firebeard who first struck back and killed the first dragon with the Golden Pike, piercing a great wyrm through the heart.
To the elves, it was Elisif Moonsong, using the spear of the world-tree.
To the humans, it was the unnamed Hero from the North, using the First Sword of Man.
And so on, each race telling a very similar story with slight variations. The weapon is described in all manner of fanciful, exaggerated terms. An arrow of purest crystal. A lance of Ysgardian iron. Always piercing the heart.
Should anyone, against all odds, actually manage to locate the tomb of the ancient hero, their expectations will be left in pieces. Rather than grand catacombs of ancient architecture, they find a natural cave covered in crudely carved petroglyphs and simply stacked and arranged block stones. The hero's resting place is marked only by a natural, uncarved boulder in the center of a sandy room. He is buried under the boulder, and clutched to his heart is the true weapon.
The dragonspike, the first mortal-made weapon to ever slay a dragon, is a simple shortspear with a gnarled ironwood shaft, apparently a straightish fallen branch that was smoothed with a stone knife. The head is a roughly 6-inch long shard of bloodstone, affixed to the shaft by natural clays, gums, and wrapped plant fiber rope.
Should someone try to identify the race of the ancient hero (to settle that whole dispute once and for all), they are quite shocked to find that the skeleton, while certainly humanoid, looks almost like an ape, with a sloped forehead and heavy jaw. Someone with knowledge of anatomy, biology, or the healing arts could point out structural similarities to every known humanoid race.
The history of the dragon war is far older than today's mortals realize, and the dragonspike is an exceedingly rare relic from that time. Even to this day, dragons fear it and fight desperately to keep knowledge of its location secret.

1. The Blade of Sjornskar is both the name of an ancient longsword and the name of the hero who wields it. Forged and wielded long ago by the mythical hero Sjornskar, this +1 longsword was crafted to aid in the defense the villagers of Brekkur. When wielded in defense of noncombatant creatures, you can make one attack with it as a bonus action on each of your turns. In addition, hostile creatures attack with disadvantage when attacking a target within 5 feet of you.
2. Ugranil the lazy orcish wizard who hails from the Sea of Sand… and has a bit of a drinking problem. Ugranil was barely allowed entry into the Lyceum Arcanum due to his orcish heritage. He managed to scrape together the grades to pass his courses and graduate – barely! On the night of his graduation he and his classmates went to the local tavern to celebrate and, determined to show off to his friends by way of his orcish fortitude, Ugranil had a bit too much to drink. A few too many ales later, he found himself expelled from his Order due to a prank involving a Halfling, a crude drawing of a flumph, and a prestidigitation spell gone awry. Despondent at being cast out, Ugranil has been drowning his sorrows with ale ever since, secretly hiring out his services as a wizard to any who will hire him.
3. You find a scroll of Beast Bond, created by the Firbolg druid Symund because he was tired of talking to his animal friends without being able to understand their responses.

1: The Sand Stone may just be a Sentinel Shield, but to those few who have seen it, it is so much more. Used to help the kings of Sraja defend their desert kingdom from the blue dragon kirak. However after generations of silence from the beast the Sand Stone was sealed away. Thus they were unprepared when it returned.
2: The Spinticator has terrorized the village of Iscor for generations. Said to be the soul of a man who gets lost i the swamp. It stocks those who wander to deep and rips away the flesh and eat the bones. It then animates the skin into it's children. But in reality it is a Ghast.
3:The prized possession of the poet Alsion, this scroll of illusory script was used to hide messages to his fellows in the Telair rebelion within his poems.
4: Hidden is a strange one, a tiefling woman who will appear in town without anyone seeing her enter. She is a world renound achemist and for good reason, she is the only one who knows the secret of Invisibiity.

Pick a generic monster and give it a unique name and backstory. 3. Pick a spell that might be found as a scroll and flavor it as a unique creation. 4. Describe a character in a low fantasy world that the players can befriend to gain access to something they can't get any other way. I'm going to do all four at the same time because I hate myself. First, some background: Jackalweres are probably among the least used monsters in the entire manual because of their ancient egyptian flavour (whereas most games are set in a medieval europe inspired setting). They're basically jackal-headed shapeshifters with the ability to put people to sleep with their gaze. So, let's do this! Priestess Vamunaptra, Doctor of the Pallour of RestVamunaptra is a middle-aged dark-skinned woman who dresses herself in thick black robes and covers her face with the mask of a wild dog. The dog's eyes are closed and the nose is curiously wet, but the mask is otherwise inanimate. She has been offered many positions at the great palaces of the pharoahs but each time she turns them down. She works as a specialised doctor in a local clinic in a small town. Most would say this is a waste of her talents. She specialises in three areas: curing insomnia, providing relief from pain, and preparing souls for entry into the afterlife. She will put patients to sleep before a difficult surgery, or just to assist those who have trouble resting without help. She flips up the visor on her mask to show her true eyes underneath, and her patients fall into a deep slumber that they cannot be woken from. If they are unwilling, they wake up within 10 minutes, so she tries to make them as comfortable as possible and guide them through the process as thoroughly as she can to ensure that their sleep is satisfying, deep, dreamless, restful, and of appropriate length. Word of her talents is widespread and she often gets people travelling thousands of miles to her village in search of respite from terrible chronic pains, or to seek restful slumber in spite of terrible nightmares, or for a peaceful and dignified death where they are cared for with kindness and respect in their final days. She also has a talent for crafting scrolls of papyrus, either as documentation of her work or as a spell that her patients can take home and apply without her help. These are mostly for those with recurring insomnia who can't afford to sleep at her hospital every night. Scrolls of the Dreaming JackalThis is a scroll of sleep. It has no words, only images in the form of simple hieroglyphs. The ink has been taken from dried and processed jackal dung. Most people who acquire such scrolls are patients of Vamunaptra, but there of course exists a very small black market, as she is unable to personally ensure that every scroll is used for the right purpose. The scrolls are generally used as a cure for insomnia, requiring two people (as you will fall asleep before finishing reading it; the spell will not be completed and the effects will nitre main permanent) but some use it for more nefarious purposes. This isn't as widespread as it has the potential to be because, again, if the target is unwilling, the effects are much less potent and much less permanent. Vamunaptra is often seen wandering the wastelands in search of the materials she needs to craft her scrolls. Some say she transforms into a jackal herself once every full moon. Scimitar of the RestlessIronically, Vamunaptra herself cannot find rest, either each night where she lies awake, or in the sweet release of death, for she possesses and undying body. The only weapons that can harm her are those forged of silver, and she carries such a silver weapon with her at all times: the Scimitar of the Restless. It's a long, thin, gently curving blade of pure silver that never tarnishes. Each night she contemplates impaling herself through the stomach with her own blade, but each night she chooses to remain alive as long as there are people in the world who still benefit from her work. The scimitar is a +1 silvered weapon (otherwise dealing nonmagical damage) that puts the target to sleep for 1 minute if the target is below 20 hit points. So there you have it!

1. Name a weapon and describe its history.
• Bivild’s fork: Bivild is a local legend, a giant who may or may not have ever existed, but is often referenced and many stories exist of him. In an old story he is said to have fought a dragon with his fork or some say that he made his fork from the dragon’s bone. - A +1 Quadrent with a loop at the end for tying a rope to.
- Has been on the wall of the Wholesteed Manor (they even made a plaque for it). When first the Demon of Wholesteed Field appeared, Harnin Wholesteed went out to face it with Bivild’s Fork riding on his finest horse and accompanied by his hunting dog Bailey. A strong man who knew his way around a pitchfork, he was never seen again. 2 days later Bailey limped out of the field, since that time the only people to have gone out into Wholesteed field and come back out alive have had Old Bailey by their side.
- Actually the hand of Elpa.
• The Hand of Elpa: a Quadrant (4 pronged trident). Ancient stories tell of a time when fish men came from the sea to conquer the land, their god king Elpa, carried a trident (quadrent) of bone that ate light(ning) and bit like a shark. Elpa would strike so hard he could blow ships and walls to pieces. At the trident’s base was a glowing gem (pearl of power) that he could use to call storms. When a hero slew Elpa with his own trident, the Hero claimed the Quadrent and used it to slay all the fishmen who did not flee back into the sea. So fierce was he that the fishmen still remember and have never since ventured above the waves. Afterwards the hero called himself Elpa, claiming to have inherited his powers. - +1 trident (Quadrent) (+2 if attuned to a pearl) of some unknown material halfway between steel and a barnacle. When lightning is nearby it always strikes the trident, charging it with electrical energy; gives the bearer a tingly feeling, but they are unharmed (effectively immune to lightning).
- If the Quadrent is charged (lasts 24 hrs unless holds a pearl) and strikes the ground (it must actually be thrust into the ground or another hard surface) it produces a thunderwave (like spell) and consumes the charge. If a pearl from the ocean is placed into the loop at the end it is transformed into a pearl of power and may hold a lightning charge (s pearl: may have 1 charge for 24 hrs, c pearl: may have 1 charge indefinitely and another for 24 hrs).
- If the Hand of Elpa has 2 charges the wielder may consume both of them to cast Shatter.
2. Pick a generic monster and give it a unique name and backstory.
The Demon of Wholesteed field: a scarecrow (MM, 268). While plowing a corner of Wholesteed field a huge stone was uncovered. When Kulban Wholesteed, with the help of some farm hands, pulled it up they uncovered an ancient crypt. The next day Kulban and some of his friends were set on going into it; what they found is unknown, as is their fate. What is known is that night was the first spotting of the Demon’s harbinger. For a week dark and sinister scarecrows started being spotted in and around the field; when investigated they were found to be elaborate scarecrows of sticks and very old leather. No one had seen Kulban or the others since that day, but all figured it was an elaborate prank by him and his friends. Then the killings started, few witnesses said the killer was a demon like a 10 ft. tall shadow carrying a pitch fork. Sometimes the sinister scarecrow was seen in the area, it came to be known as the demons harbinger, it never seemed to be found later. If Kulban and his friends were responsible they have taken this much too far, the whole Wholesteed family save Suza, the mother, and one daughter (who live with the mothers’ sisters’ family now) has been slain and all their lands cursed. Lightning is said to strike the same point in the field over and over anytime there is a storm, but no fire ever rises. No one has come out of the fields alive without Old Bailey by their side, the dog is said to suddenly start barking and then growl; if you haven’t fled by the time he starts growling it might already be too late. Of course, the deaths haven’t only been in the field and it hasn’t only been Wholesteeds either, no one goes out after dark anymore unless they’ve got a death wish or too much liquid courage. 3. Pick a spell that might be found as a scroll and flavor it as a unique creation.
Scroll of animate object - Nailed to the back of the Demon of Wholesteed Field (scarecrow), if removed the scarecrow crumbles into dust.
- The scroll is branded leather, so old the leather is shrunken and shriveled but still tough, and written (scorched) in a language only a scholar of the arcane would know (draconic).
- If placed onto an inanimate object (10 minute cast time, see spell) it will animate until removed or falls off.
4. Describe a character in a low fantasy world that the players can befriend to gain access to something they can't get any other way.
Old Bailey: +2 dog of alarm. - Old Bailey barks and growls when danger approaches, offers enough warning for you to run away so long as it’s not too far and you know where to go or if you want to fight at least you won’t be surprised.
- If you want to go into the overgrown and unkept Wholesteed Field, you will want him by your side.
Batti Kuluran, aka the widow Kuluran. - If your players are looking for something, she has had a dream of one of them fighting it’s guardian in front the sought item. She can describe the surrounding area giving you clues to where it might be found, in addition what they will face there. After meeting your party, she will have a similar dream of each of the others regarding something else they will eventually seek.
- Her late husband was from a local family of high regard. He left to try his hand at adventuring and came back married to Batti with a permanent limp. He would tell his family that she would have dreams of the future; and they certainly seemed to always be ahead of any events. Now she is mostly plagued by nightmares and has heavy bags under her eyes.
- Has a small farm where she raises her two sons, always getting in fights with the other kids who tease them about their mother. Her apples are the sweetest and goats eat everything else; also sells goat milk, cheese, and meat.
