PREFACE - Okay, so im sure many of you can relate to this, and this is likely why you joined this forum, but im a DM, and i have lots of campaign ideas that i want to talk about with friends, however, many of my friends play in my campaigns, and i dont want to spoil anything for them, so im gonna share some of my ideas here.
MAUSOLEUM - so basically, i had my players enter into a mausoleum after they discovered that some of the bodies from nearby graves had been stolen. They were asked to do this by a wealthy citizen, and he offered them a reward for checking on his ancestors and their treasures. this was a fairly simple process, and i had one encounter in the mausoleum where the players had to avoid aggravating guardian robots, and then had to stop a group of grave robbing kobolds who had dug a tunnel into the mausoleum.
UNDEAD ARMY - after the players emerge from the mausoleum they realize that an army of the dead had been risen by a lich and a vampire who were working together. the players then begin fighting their way through the town streets, slaying the undead they come across as they work their way towards the floating forms of the lich and vampire that they see around the town square area. as they are making their way towards the square they come across a human woman who is fighting undead, and seams to certainly know what she is doing. after she beats some undead, demonstrating her power before the players, she dashes off in the opposite direction of the players.
DEFENDING THE KEEP - the players finally make their way to the keep, where some knights and a paladin are making a last stand to defend the keep from the undead army, the lich, and the vampire. the players then assist in defending the keep, and in the middle of the fight the mysterious woman appears again, and her disguise spell drops, revealing her to be a tiefling woman with a small imp companion. there are several ballistas and bowmen atop the keeps roof shooting down at the undead. ultimately, all of the knights are killed in the struggle, save for a paladin, who falls unconscious during the battle, but does not die. the vampire is killed permentantly, but the lich's remains are sucked into a small portal after he dies to show the players that the lich's phylactery is still intact.
THE INEVITABLES - after the fight the tiefling woman requests that the players follow her into a portal, telling them that she has a job opportunity for them. they do this, and the tiefling throws some scrap metal on the ground, which assembles itself into a portal that transports the party to a modron portal room on mechanus with a few modron guards that they must defeat. the party then takes another portal after defeating the modrons, and this portal leads them into a library for a base for an organization known as the I MPD, or the inevitables material plane division. the players are invited to join the organization by its leader, a frog man in large red robes known as the grand reaper, and it is explained to the players that the organization was created to destroy those who seek to artificially extend their lives by unnatural means. the lich and vampire that the party assisted in slaying were the targets of the tiefling woman, whos name is revealed to be Minerva.
THE PLAN GOING FOREWARD - this is where my last campaign ended, and i plan to have them teleport to the nearby docks, where a pirate lich is sailing with a crew of gnolls, and they plan to sack the town that the players have been defending. but the idea i have going is that since their are a group of beings known as the inevitables on mechanus who hold the same goal as the MPD, the grand reaper is actually a lich that is being forced to hunt down liches and such, or else the mechanus inevitables will take his life. i also imagine the mehcanus inevitables have the grand reaper's phylactory. i also think that as the players hunt down more targets the targets will ask who sent the players to kill them, and if they tell them about the grad reaper, then they will be warned about the fact that the grand reaper may not be what he seems, and his motivations may not be true.
CONCLUSION - please do let me know what you think of this ideaif you do happen to have read all of this, and feel free to steal any of these ideas, i would only be flattered if you do. thanks again!!
