“It’s so hard to find good help these days!” The necromancer Tragolin Tazch exclaimed to no one in particular the skeletal guardsmen creaking slightly as they scanned the room in there endless vigil over there masters well being.
“Perhaps” He breathed with a slight sigh “It is time to try a different brand of help”
He waved his arms over the dark shard of meteorite stone, polished to perfection and empowered by years of the darkest magical inscriptions upon it’s almost unmarkable surface and peered into the deep, dark, inner shadows and spied those who would become his champions in the open world.
He would soon start the ritual to bring them before him, most of them already working for him via proxy of underlings currently too useful to add to his growing legion of terrors...what the world would make of them he wondered as he set about gathering the dark ruineus powers within himself.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I’m going to be starting a slightly more ‘evil’ campaign setting soon, the world is a small shard of my own creation set in the southern most reaches of the map where volcanos reach high in jagged points, currently the area is undergoing a form of turf war between several powerful factions, the majority of them evil.
Whilst I have agreed to run this in exchange for the players agreeing not to go off the deep end of ‘Raid and pillage’ - with the exception of one who’s ether playing a half-giant or a very big, very mean dog. I have never run an ‘evil’ game before but I do have one or two ideas running around in my head for how to make this all work.
Of course I have story-beats in mind that they will come across no matter what:
- Running into the good/holy faction attempting to take hold of the lands.
- Granting an audience (willingly or no) to one of the more powerful dark lords seeking conquest.
- A few rounds of political sabotage and backstabbing (they are not playing very nice people, after all).
- Acquireing a lair of there own.
- Running afoul of the 2nd ‘evil party’ repeatedly (all NPC).
- Seeking a powerful relic or two of there own juuuuust in case they choose to try and take over.
What I’m having trouble with is how to actually run the game…
In my mind I can ether:
Run it as a dark ‘good’ game where they are trying to portray themselves as heroes, which of course will be all the more delicious once they reveal that they are in league with the great evil that has taken the land and lead the ‘rebellion’ right to the doorstep of the one who’s ready to smite them.
OR
Have them as the lowest fish in the pool, the common gang bosses are higher up in the pecking order than they are and they will have to make a name for themselves one way or another…
Beyond that I'm really not sure how to roll with this...
Let me know what you lords and ladies think, I would be happy to hear any suggestions and even event ideas whilst I run this little misadventure!
