Thinking about game mechanics for large scale warfare and how to make it awesome. I'm thinking about just writing up character sheets where the hp is one for every soldier and each unit is really good at one thing. Like scouts are good at stealth but crappy in defense or a barbarian unit has high attack low AC. Anyone got any advice?

how I have run larger battles. 2 non player characters fight. they both roll 1d20+mod, within 5 is a draw, 5+ wins i tend to group people into the same initiative if there are a lot. In super large battles that the players are in... "There is a battle around you, roll ref save for random arrow." And in general. i give random NPC goon # whatever a very basic set of stats: Archers AC 15, F+5 R+5 W+3 Atk +5(1d8+1) HP (1 hit KO if damage is 10+, 2 hits if less)
