Hey everyone. I am new to DMing and I am having trouble picking a monster for a certain encounter. My campaign is centered around a demonic cult that is attempting to summon demon lords. This will obviously never happen as the players are only level 3 at this point in time. The demonic cult consists of several different characters including several different classes. The cultist that I am planning for the players to fight in the next session is a death druid that I made. This character has been hinted to be a bad person several times and by now the players know something is up. I made this druid more as a conjuration druid as in she conjures monsters to fight for her. The two main spells she uses to conjure monsters is Giant Insect and Conjure Animals. The goal was for the players to find her underneath her house which is actually a very large cave system that leads to her lair. The first encounter they will have is a hallucinatory terrain that looks like ground but is actually a large hole. Within the large whole the players will find hundreds and hundreds of insects crawling around in which the druid will turn 10 of the centipedes into giant centipedes using Giant Insect. After this encounter the players will have to find there way to her lair. However, in front of her lair I would like her to use the Conjure Animals spell to summon a CR 2 Beast.
I am having trouble finding a good beast for her to summon as I want the encounter to be cool. My first idea was for her to summon a Allosaurus that will charge at them. My second idea which I think seems much more interesting is that there will be a lake, about 60 feet long and 20 feet wide, that the players must cross in order to get to the lair. The idea was that there is a very small bridge that the players will cross and underneath the bridge will be a Plesiosaurus that the druid conjured. The players may not encounter it if they sneak over the bridge but I think this would be a very cool encounter. I was wondering what you guys think of this as I am new to DMing so Id like any help I can get. Thanks!
