I'm trying to make my end baddie for the Lost Mines of Phandelver bigger and badder (and to create a general link to the next campaign) so Neznarr is now a black dragon trapped in a drow form. His motivation for being in Wave Echo Cave is to escape the curse/spell/item?? that has imprisoned him as a dragon.
I could really use your help to come up with some ideas such as:
Who/What/What was he imprisoned in this form? How could the Forge of Spells be used to break him free?
I've even considered that the imprisonment may have been self-inflicted by a spell gone wrong or a magically spelled item that he put on without realizing that he would be unable to take it off. Anyhow, so many ideas but I also want the story to be plausible. Since my characters are only 4th level, they obviously can't fight an adult dragon (I play for him to escape - but to be freed from his humanoid imprisonment).
I've also thought about trying to get him to manipulate the players into making him a magical hammer that could smash the item (ring/anklet/arm band??) to break the curse.
Help? And feel free to tell me if any of these ideas are stupid or implausible for low level characters.

He was imprisoned by a drow wizaed whom Nezzur continuously mocked for his weak humanoid form. The wizard Drey'zur sought to humiliate the dragon by using Nezzur vanity against him. He tricked Nezzur into wearing a gorgeous black star metal emerald and sapphire encrusted armband. The armband not only traps him in drow form but allows him to cast shield 3 times per day.
Maybe freeing the dragon summons Drey'zur who puts the party to work. Perhaps with some side quests into Out of the Abyss territory.

I was thinking more about this as I drove through Michigan today.
The dragon has to go to Wave Echo because the armband was originally enchanted there before Drey'zur modified to trap him.

Just a quick update: I ended up using a bit of a cheat because my group is taking a break for the summer and wanted to wrap up the campaign (it was frustrating to be so rushed but it worked out). Neznarr was trapped in a drow form as a punishment for failing Tiamet. Because he was trapped instead of choosing to transform, the body itself was being continually eaten by his own acid so he was driven by the need to find the heart of the Forge of Spells to be able to transform back. I didn't end up creating a lot of logical reasons for why this item would help him because my players were more interesting in killing him than in the mechanics. It turned out really well so thanks for the advice. (DM_RULE - your idea was way more interesting, but I just didnt have time to write in a new character)
