so, in the world im making, the raven queen is a lesser (but still very powerful) deity who resides in the outer plane of death (aka "The Eternal Graveyard") and shes a bird person, and this was a perfect opportunity to change up a preexisting race, the kenku. i feel like they kinda get ****ty treatment. like, "cursed criminal crow who cant talk or have creative thoughts?" what the hell! everyone loves birds but that just sounds so soulcrushing to play as or even think about! so, in my world, the raven queen created these beautiful corvids to be her subjects and to serve her.
i made a few changes to basically, how kenku work. for one, you know how they had claw hands and claw feet? i found this grossly inaccurate to actual birds and a bit unsettling so i have decided they have these arm-wing things. they are kinda like wings but flying with them would require a real ****ton of upper body strength. they have these fancy feathers at the end that basically act like fingers. problem solved!
anyways, most (about 70%) of kenku live in the eternal graveyard with the raven queen and a ton of ghosts (the ghosts are NATURALLY there!! the raven queen doesnt consider them the kind of undead she needs to destroy) and they have a pretty good life. just because the raven queen has no pity towards the dead doesnt mean she has to make the living miserable. some kenku reside in the material plane. the raven queen does not restrict planar travel much for her subjects. some kenku in the material plane were sent by the queen, to track down a powerful necromancer or to guard an ancient tomb, and some simply live there. the kenku who live there live in isolated treetop colonies, who create wonderful platforms and bridges in the canopies. some live in towns and cities but they are uncommon. kenku from the material plan sometimes have color variations from the normal black, such as grey or purple markings, or iridescent feathers. the colonies keep the beliefs and most of the traditions from their origin but kenku exposed to many other beliefs can differ. most kenku clerics use the divine power of the raven queen, same for kenku warlocks.
anyways! on to the new stat info and whatever!
Ability Score Increase- +2 to dexterity +1 to wisdom
Age- Kenku reach adulthood at 16 and can live to be about 150
Alignment- Like their creator, kenku tend towards lawful neutral. kenku are rarely evil.
Size- Most kenku are around 5 feet tall. Your size is medium
Darkvision- It is always night in The Eternal Graveyard, where the kenku hail from, therefore their eyes are adapted to see in darkness. You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in Darkness as if it were dim light. You can’t discern color in Darkness, only shades of gray.
Mimicry- You can flawlessly mimic any sound you have heard that is not the voice of a creature speaking a language. You must succeed of a DC 13 int check to mimic a voice speaking any language.
Commune with birds- Due to your similarities, you can understand and communicate simple messages and concepts to any bird.
Necrotic resistance- Because of your creator's relation to death, you have resistance to necrotic damage
Languages- You can read, speak, and write common and celestial. Your mimicry trait can also be used for limited communication
ok this may change!!! please give feedback;;
