Hey all, new poster to the forums here. I've been running a a group of my old players (we started playing in the '80s) through the Out of the Abyss campaign using Fantasy Grounds. Love the platform, and the ability for us old family folks to spend a couple of hours each week reliving old memories is fantastic. After over a year of playing this campaign (we took about 6 months off to run some custom story that I wrote and interjected between the major segments of the pre-gen campaign) my party made it to the Maze Engine encounter. Given my usual luck, they opted to power on the Maze Engine and promptly rolled the effect of being instantly transported back in time to the start of the campaign with all memories, experience and gear intact.
Obviously how to proceed is a decision fraught with consequences. I could let them rerun the adventure from the start, although I don't think any of them have an urge to revisit the entire camapaign. I could treat it as if it was a temporary rift in time, and use Virzan DeVir as a deus ex machina to pull them back to the present. I could have them create a paradox that draws the attention of the Gods and leads to a climactic battle then and there, bringing a rapid end to the campaign.
I'm just not sure which way to proceed. Do they encounter their older selves? Is there a paradox? What about the characters that joined the party later on? What can they change in the timeline? What should I let them change in the timeline? Do I break off entirely and guide them into acting as some sort of secret order of temporal agents seeking to undo the damage they caused while also working to stop the demonic incursion?
Have any of you had this particular outcome from the Maze Engine encounter? How did you opt to handle it? How did it work out?
We are on a hiatus for a couple of weeks due to Mother's Day, so I have some breathing room for planning. I'd love some ideas and feedback.
Thanks!
