I'm beginning the groundwork for a setting blog separate from my current (heh) one focused on that setting's undersea regions. At the moment I am working on the deities that would be most widely worshiped in the starting region, and decided to go a different route than the norm. Rather than coming up with a pantheon of gods, I am coming up with a short list of deities and (for the most part) giving those gods 3 additional cults/sects that revere a different yet recognizable version of that deity. Basically, 4 gods for the price of 1. I don't have the sects finished yet, but the main deities are: - Ilkorath, the Kraken Lord
- Kaikepa, the First King (also the only one on this list without sects)
- Maora, the Trench Keeper
- Tanna Ko, the Kelp Mother
- Yon Ta, the Coral Father
What I have so far of the faiths is that Ilkorath is ruthless, mercurial, and dwells in the dark depths where light does not penetrate. Kaikepa is revered by the koup'ira as the founder of their civilization and their first king. Maora is the god of death and bane of undead. Tanna Ko provides both light from the sun and shelter in the vast kelp forests. Lastly, Yon Ta taught the secrets of magic to the mortal races in direct defiance of the Mandates of Creation.
Alignment-wise, each deity falls on the Neutral spectrum, but none are True Neutral. Ilkorath is Chaotic Neutral, Kaikepa and Maora are both Lawful Neutral, Tanna Ko is Neutral Good, and Yon Ta is Neutral Evil. Each of the 3 sects linked to Ilkorath, Maora, Tanna Ko, and Yon Ta are 1 step away from the base's alignment, (IE: Ilkorath's divergent sects worship CG, TN, and CE deities).
Note: To anyone comparing everything that I've provided on the aquatic part of my setting, yes I am drawing heavy Polynesian influences for the names. The one exception is for a race called the Tabemisu, which I'm drawing from Akkadian/Sumerian languages and lore.

An update, I have the cult variations named as well as alignments, favored weapons, and both Pathfinder and 5e domains determined. Still working on some basic rites and rituals, but most likely that won't be fully fleshed out without player input.
Ilkorath, the Kraken Lord, has the Pathfinder domains Animal, Chaos, Darkness, Knowledge, and Weather and his 5e incarnation has the domains Knowledge and Tempest. His alignment is Chaotic Neutral and his favored weapon is the short sword. Divergent cults worship Aruk the Dark Below, Bauni the Lord of Winds, and Kona the Endless Current. Aruk is True Neutral, his favored weapon is the short spear, his Pathfinder domains are Charm, Darkness, Destruction, Madness, and Trickery while his 5e domains are Trickery and War. Bauni is Chaotic Good, his favored weapon is the dagger, his Pathfinder domains are Air, Animal, Chaos, Good, and Weather while his 5e domain is Tempest. Kona is Chaotic Evil, his favored weapon is the longspear, his Pathfinder domains are Chaos, Evil, Magic, Travel, and Water while his 5e domain is Arcana.
Kaikepa, the First King, is the closest thing to a deity that the koup'ira worship and is believed to be the founder of their civilization. His alignment is Lawful Neutral, his favored weapon is the greatspear, his Pathfinder domains are Community, Law, Nobility, Repose, and Travel while his 5e domain is War.
Maora, the Trench Keeper, has the Pathfinder domains Death, Law, Protection, Repose, and Travel. In 5e he has the Grave domain. His alignment is Lawful Neutral and his favored weapon is the trident. Divergent cults worship the Lawgiver Anula, Kiikii the Keeper of the Wilds, and Mau Una the King of the Living Dead. Anula's alignment is Lawful Good, her favored weapon is the glaive, and her domains in Pathfinder are Artifice, Community, Good, Law, and Nobility while in 5e she possesses the War domain. Kiikii is True Neutral, her favored weapon is the quarterstaff, and her domains in Pathfinder are Air, Animal, Earth, Flora*, and Water while her 5e domain is Nature. Mau Una is Lawful Evil, favors the spear, and possesses the Death, Evil, Law, Magic, and Weather domains in Pathfinder and the Death and Tempest domains in 5e.
Tanna Ko, the Kelp Mother, in Pathfinder grants the Flora*, Good, Healing, Strength, and Sun domains while granting the Life and Light domains in 5e; her alignment is Neutral Good and she favors the dagger. Divergent cults worship Aanu the Tender of Civilization, Kura Mai the Comber of Battlegrounds, or Ula Ino the Turtle Queen. Aanu is Lawful Good, her favored weapon is the glaive, she grants the Community, Good, Law, Luck, and Sun domains in Pathfinder while granting the Life domains in 5e. Kura Mai is Chaotic Good, her favored weapon is the lance, she grants the Pathfinder domains Chaos, Glory, Good, Repose, and Strength domains while granting the Grave and War domains in 5e. Ula Ino is True Neutral, her favored weapon is the greatspear, her granted 5e domain is Nature, and her granted Pathfinder domains are Animal, Charm, Flora*, Protection, and Travel.
Yon Ta, the Coral Father, is Neutral Evil, his favored weapon is the urchin fist**, in 5e grants the Knowledge domain, and grants the Evil, Charm, Magic, Rune, and Steam*** domains in Pathfinder. Cults that broke away from the traditional faith worship instead Akhuna the Guardian of Lore, Lino the Seeker of Secrets, or Matu Nok the Earthshaker. Akhuna is True Neutral, his favored weapon is the dagger, grants the Arcana and Trickery domains in 5e, and grants the Knowledge, Luck, Magic, Protection, and Trickery domains in Pathfinder. Lino is Lawful Evil, his favored weapon is the spear, he grants the Knowledge domain in 5e, and grants the Artifice, Evil, Law, Rune, and Strength domains in Pathfinder. Matu Nok is Chaotic Evil, his favored weapon is the short sword, he grants the War domain in 5e, and grants the Chaos, Destruction, Earth, Evil, and Steam domains in Pathfinder.
* Flora is a modified, aquatic variant of the Plant domain found in the Cerulean Seas campaign setting book. ** Mechanically a morningstar made by lashing a sea urchin onto the fist end of a thick glove. *** Steam fills the niche of the Fire domain for obvious reasons, like the Flora domain it can be found in the Cerulean Seas campaign setting book.
