Guns are back. Revamped version of d20 modern built for 5e was just released. Or at least the article sized version of it. dnd.wizards.com/articles/features/my-new-d20-modern-campaignI was never one to enjoy modern day + fantasy. I needed something more over the top to suit my fancies (sword and laser, spelljammer, shadowrun, etc.) Has anyone played in a d20 modern game and loved it? If so please let me know what was cool about it, and what made the game fun. Would love to broaden my perspective whenever possible.

Kinda interesting. I will look into it a bit and see what I can draw into my world.

If so please let me know what was cool about it, and what made the game fun. Would love to broaden my perspective whenever possible. My current game takes a more fantasy + (early) modern approach. My players seem to be really enjoying it. They've progressed from their "standard fantasy" homeland out into a wasteland scattered with remnants of early modern technologies. D20 modern/D20 past have been great resources thusfar. My players get mad-excited whenever they find relics of the future-past: pistols, a type writer, railroad tracks.
I'm not sure if this directly answers your questions, but what I think (and my player's seem to agree) is cool about it is the variation. We've all played so much Tolkien-esque fantasy that we know "all the moves" so to speak. Putting in modern artifacts gives the setting a different tone and opens up a multitude of side-quests as they track down relics and materials to recreate them. (They're a craft-intensive group so I've broken down the firearms into "pieces" video-game style. They periodically find sections of the Mechanix Codex which has descriptions & blueprints of firearms that earn them "pieces" of firearms ranging from 3-6 "pieces").

I really like the idea of peppering it in. I definitely can't see doing a full blown d20 modern campaign from either side of the screen, but leveraging it into some Numenera style artifacts would be pretty fun.

We haven't done any modern-style campaigns yet but I do like to splice guns into my games every now & again. I particularly like the idea of a non-magic user who somewhat "fires spells" with a fancy gun of some sort. Or sometimes there'll be one country on the map that's figured out primers and rifling and equipped their troops with firearms. It's a bit of a mingling either way and one I tend to enjoy exploring.

This is really helpful as I ramp up for my futuristic steampunkish game (which I have been preparing for way too long). Thanks for the article!
