For my anniversary a few weeks back the wife and I went to see Cirque du Soleil: Varekai and couldn't help but go the way of the Dmmainprize and think about what the show could look like in terms of being inspiration for a campaign/session. It based off of the Greek myth of Icarus when he flew too close to the sun and fell to the earth. Rather than him drowning in the sea he lands in a forest and is surrounded by crazy creatures who try to understand him and eventually help him to some semblance of normal life without his powers.
Having a higher power fall to earth in the form of a comet while the party is traveling from point A to point B would be an awesome start. If they want to find out what it is they could traipse through the forest to get there, and all the DM joys that come with that idea. The best of course is to have a random encounter table for players to roll on. The party can stumble onto the scene of the crash and find the fallen creature, or maybe they only find the scene of crash and clues to where the creature was taken, or set out on its own.
The basis of the story could take the path of the big bad evil trying to take the creature for its own devices, or trying to keep
it.
Even after the creature is rescued or guarded the party could then try and get the creature its power back, or try to rehabilitate the creature to the world they are now in. The other idea I think would be great is that the creature falls to earth, and their power alters the area surrounding where the creature lands. That way you could throw things that the PCs aren't really expecting into the mix.
I could probably right more and more, but I think this is enough to get the idea across. Definitely Google Varekai and check out the craziness of the costumes, and definitely could be inspiration for some monsters.
