Here's a little gem I've been playing around with:
The Barbarian's Book Club
Long ago there was a great and terrible human barbarian who was know as Xavier Crunk. Late in his life he had begun to grow melancholy for though he had traveled far and crushed many an empire, he began to wonder what this was all for. Who would be there to sing his tales of triumph and misery long after he is anointed in death?
His question was soon answered when he sifted trough the ruins of a castle he had razed to find a lone tome eerily unscathed in the embers. The pages blank; waiting for a story.
He took this as a sign and with the heart of a barely literate bard, he poured his life's tale upon the magical pages unknowingly creating what would be his legacy; the Book Club.
The book is divided into ten chapters, each chronicling a moment in Crunk's odyssey as he traveled everywhere from plains of fire to fields of acid to battling with the gods themselves.
Whilst holing the book, when a character speaks the command word and a line from one of the ten chapters, the book transforms into a fierce +3 club that does an extra 2d6 damage based on the chapter of which the line was read. The act of choosing the line and transforming into the weapon counts as one action, or the player can take a bonus action and choose a chapter at random (roll a d10 against the chart below).
The club returns to book form only when an action is taken to do so, or when the wielder is incapacitated.
Book Chapters:
1-Fire
2-Cold
3-Poison
4-Acid
5-Psychic
6-Necrotic
7-Radiant
8-Lightning
9-Thunder
10-Force
An example would be as follows:
'Bruticus senses battle is near and grabs the Book Club from his belongings. He riffles through the pages until settling on a verse from chapter 6. Wild cold eyes, he speaks the command word and reads, "Crunk no like zombies, but sometimes Crunk dead inside too".
Suddenly, the spin of the bound pages grows, glowing green from the fires of hell as a mighty club appears in Bruticus' giant maws. It crackles of Death, ready to unleash its necrotic fury'
Not the most powerful weapon in the world, but fun none-the-less.
