Right, sooo... My party is going into Wave Echo Cave (in another month or so of irl time) and it looks like Black Spider won't be there. My current plan is to have the Paladin's cult-aligned sister and a Black Spider agent that killed the rogue's lover be part of a rival party coming into the caves from another entrance.* I need something for my lvl 5 party of six to battle, and an idea struck me.
"As you burst into the large antechamber, a voice shakes the caverns. 'Who dares disturb my slumber.' In the inky blackness of the far wall, a large glowing eye opens and begins to rise from the floor. As it does, one - two- three- four, no, ten little glowing points of light appear around it, waving through the air. The large, central eye glares at you as 'sch-fwip!' the ten smaller points of light come around to focus on your party."
Now if what I just described doesn't sound like a Beholder about to laydown a serious pants-crappening, then I need to work on my read-aloud text. However, this isn't what it is, I just want to give that appearance in order to scare my players. What it actually is, is a Cyclops mage wearing 'The Medusa's Crown', an item whose snake-like apendages give off those little points of light.
My one concern is that the players will get ahold of this item by the end of the battle and I'm trying to come up with a way to either:
A) Have it be breakable or lost by battle's end
B) Nerf it a little for a PC, but with an explination as to why it was still powerful in the hands of an npc
C) A little bit of both, like how defeating more Thay wizards makes Tiamat less powerful when she's summoned.
Please let me know what you think!
*With the idea that whomever claims the most rooms/Spell Forge, gets to claim dominion...expect cheating.
