Hey all, new DM looking for some help In my campaign, that's about to start, the BBEG is this warlock trying to summon his patron into the world. Since the party is carrying on from level 5, my first thought was to have them encounter a group of "collectors", basically cultists who kidnap people to fuel the ritual. Thus gaining som clue as to what is going on (an obscure symbol or something). Then going on quests to try and find out more about the cult, the patron, where their base is, etc. Then I started thinking about why they would really care. Two PCs are CN, one LN, one CG and one I don't know yet, so saving the world for that good feeling you get will probably not motivate them enough. So instead I was think that an NPC they get attached to (or someone who is important in some way, at least) get taken after they have done other things and then they start the "real" quests. Throwing in some of the quests I had planned while they do other things. What I could use some help with is how do I plant small subtle seed that something larger is going on, while they are doing other things? What I mean is rumors and clues that seem trivial at first glance until you start seeing the big picture.

A while ago i did a quest line investigating slave traders. What i did to give hints was had a local law enforcment agent die and have the pc investigate it to find a map of all places where people where kidnapped and a list of names. The final town on the map was circled to men next town. If they go to that town and interuot the kidnapping they can get info from them. If they just leave it be they her there was a body found in a town.
Tldr; notes, letters, maps, signs of struggle, eye witnesses too scared to say stuff, suspicious deaths ect...
if they just dont clue in, have the event happen and let the plyers deal with the after math.

"I'm too lazy" has some great ideas. The rumor mill at the local tavern is always a great way to seed information that you want the players to have. The other idea i had was going the way of the milk carton and having either posters on boards of missing people or someone handing out fliers. The heavy handed approach I had thought of, if needed, is to see about getting a character alone and attempting to kidnap them, could be successful maybe not but it will get the point across.
