Hey, everyone! I just hosted my very first session! Yay, WOO!
Not really. I completely bombed the session. I didn't portray any of my NPC's they ran into how I wanted to, lots of pauses, umms and errs. I started off so confident! But once it started, I was like "Oh. *Insert profanity, here.*" I made the lovable oaf of a village chief into a jerk, and their first opponent, who I had perfectly planned out to stroke the players' hearts if they killed him(Which they did, because instead of him being a misunderstood, confused slave of a maddened deity, I, for whatever reason, ended up turning him into edge-lord extreme.)
However! while I completely bombed the session with vocal narratives and NPC controls, I am certain I could make my campaign into a masterpiece if I could figure out how to do it through text (As a "Roleplayer", not roleplay-gamer, for numerous years, Igain frequent positive feedback on my 'story-typing' ability.) Which potentially was the very root to why I had so much false confidence going into being a DM
So, what I'm kind of asking is, have any of you done text-based DMing on Roill20 or something similar? I was thinking of having my players essentially give me their commands through vocals on skype, and I write it out, for them. Kind of like as if they're telling me how to write a book.
Examples would be...
(Me, type this out.)
You all come across a gruesome scene. Three dead villagers in close proximity, and their wounds horrific. The nearest one, still held in his large, bulky hands a two-handed, crudely made battle axe. His wound was but merely one, it appeared as if his head was crushed, and evidently clear that the mush upon the ground was a mixture of blood, brainmatter, and skull fragments. The second barbarian was equipped with heavy, stone-based fist weapons.. Weapon, at least, as his arm was torn from socket, and he bled out. The third was possibly the most shocking, pinned half-way beneath a boulder that was only slightly larger than an average human. It was clear whatever attacked these barbarians wasn't the average beast of this forest, and possessed unreal strength."
Then in skype, they would give me a command, such as our archer "Can I do perception check to see if the threat's still around?"
I'd respond on skype, with "Sure, roll 2 d20's." and if she succeeded,
I'd type out
"In the shadows of the forest, you spot a man in heavy, red platemail. Hishelmet and chestplate fashioned to sport the 'horns' of the obnix beetle(Rhino beetles altered to fit the story.) and the said, armored man steps out, into the light, his armor slathered with blood, and he bore no weapons, but mere shields. On his right shield, crudely drawn figure of a female on her knees, seeming to grieve. On the other, just as crudely drawn, a man with his arms crossed, turned away, as if disgusted, likely by whatever stood between them, not portrayed on the shields. Also on these shields, would appear to have a fresh coating of mush, just like the puddle beside the deceased, skull- crushed barbarian. The man's helmet turned accordingly, it would appear as if the armored being had his focus undivided, and upon that one barbarian still alive, currently in your party
THEN if they try to fight him...
our warpriest(A homebrew class of mine.)
On skype "I'd like to cast Pillar of Divinity on the red-armored guy, then cast Execution Sentence" He then rolls accordingly, let's say both spells are successful
I type "You call upon your divine superior, and a beam of holy power illuminates the ground beneath the heavily armored foe, and suddenly the pillar of holy power bursts from the below, 'cleansing' the foul opponent. Following this, you lift your free hand upwards, and swing it down, as if a command, for a golden guillotine blade to appear above the armored foe's head, falling downwards upon him with great force, even so forcing him onto his knees."
