My next campaign idea is a slave gladiator campaign. I'll be doing a variant on my world (as yet unnamed, see the World Generation thread if you're curious) in which a powerful Vampire/Mage/Lich (I'll have to custom create this incredibly powerful undead god king) has amassed an army and conquered most of the known world. I view him as a sort of Aztec/Egyptian god king; he has conquered the world and proclaimed himself a god in an attempt to gain divine ascendancy (again, see the World Building thread to details on that dynamic). He keeps the people in abject fear and performs great festivals of blood sacrifice to gain power.
The PCs are slaves captured and brought to the capital city. There, they are forced into arena combat. There could be many reasons they were chosen for this brand of slavery; perhaps they are warriors; they could have really pissed off a local official; perhaps they are deemed seditious; they could just be labeled as "too dangerous to live".
For whatever reasons, the PCs have to fight in the arena. They can choose to become famous gladiators if they want, of escape, or foment a slave rebellion. Most of their enemies would be undead and thralls of the empire. It would have a sort of horror tint to the campaign as well. Vampires and other undead now rule the known world, except for a few enclaves of resistance considered to primitive, remote, or troublesome for the god king to bother with at this time.
I like this idea because the PCs start with practically nothing. I envision their first fight to be unarmored and armed with short swords only against terrible odds (not too terrible though, wouldn't want a TPK on the first fight). From this foundation as being slaves, they have to build an adventure based on their characters' backgrounds.
