So this just happened probably 30 minutes ago near the end of my wednesday sessions and figured I would share it with you guys. My players were exploring a castle and in this castle some hobgoblins had captured an Owlbear and had it trapped in a room. They ended up unleashing this beast and got in a pretty intense battle with it. Blows were exchanged and blood was flowing freely on both sides. A member of the party is a blue dragonborn paladin. He hates owlbears and has a scar across his face from a fight with one that took place in his characters backstory. It came to his turn and he declared that he was filled with strength from his god and was gonna cut off the owlbears head. He rolled his attack and wouldnt you know it the lucky son of bahamut nat 20'd. So he is ready to do his double damage but first has to draw a card from my crit deck. The card he draws yields the slashing result of dazzling feint. This means that each ally adjacent to the target gets to make an attack roll as well. So I have him roll the damage. He brings the Owlbear down to 1 hp, but none of them know that. I then have each adjacent ally roll an attack. All of them hit. I tell them that the paladins sword swings true and digs deep into the owlbears neck, but sadly doesnt go through, however the attacks of his allies serve as the blows of a mighty hammer and his longsword is the nail. Each of the allies attacks strike the back of his blade pushing it the rest of the way through the owlbears neck and cutting its head clean off. They rejoiced and I smiled. The joys of cooperatively beheading an owlbear.

Unfortunate thing about decapitating owlbears, you take their head to a taxidermist so you can mount it on a wall, visitors will just think you killed a really big owl. You really need to keep the whole thing intact, or who is going to believe there was a bear attached to that thing?
Good stuff! My group will be taking another jaunt through the woods next session. Owlbear is a likely candidate for one of their obstacles, but there's a variety low CR creatures I want to throw at them while they're still low level themselves.

Those things can be scary for low level PCs!

My PCs tried to get fancy with the Owlbear scenario you speak of Dmmainprize and almost got a party member killed twice because of it. They also didn't manage to guide it into the other creatures as they had hoped, so they pretty much just set it free, haha. Certainly not as cool as having beheaded the creature though. Are they the type that is full clearing areas? My group tends to act like a strike team instead of the traditional full clear mentality.

Yes so far they have done there best to fully explore each location.

There's an owlbear in DDEX1-9: Outlaws of the Iron Route, as well. I'll be running that one a couple weeks from now, curious to see how the players deal with it. The creature is supposed to go on a rampage in the kobold camp if it is released, but that group has been exceptionally cautious, so I suspect they'll just leave it in the cage.

It is awesome that they want to use the owlbear more. I love them because they are so odd and terrifying. I hope that I can convince my players to try and tame one at some point, or the classic finding of an egg. Then you have to wonder if they would even have eggs or just babies? Haha.

Its gotta be just babies. Aside from their owl head isn't it safe to assume the rest of their anatomy is bear based? meaning they have bear sex and make bear babies.

I have one word for that kind of thinking: Platypus! Haha. I would lean towards babies rather than eggs, but could see an argument for either. I also just envisioned an evil race of creatures that breed them, and uses them as mounts *shudder*

bear sex and make bear babies. Heh. He said bear sex... Sorry, its late and I'm having a Beavis and Butthead moment. Seriously though; Bear sex, Owl babies (big eggs!). For sure.

Hope this forum isn't indexed by google, or there's going to be a lot of disappointed guests visiting soon.
