It's late in the campaign, the players, a group of 6, are average level 13, and have yet to lose a battle. Partially through my own sentimentality, and the desire to see pcs at my table reach level 20 (or beyond), I've seen them conquer cultists, deamons, and most recently a liche!
Being such powerful individuals has it's perks. They've each recovered powerful (homebrew) artifacts of significance, discovered a floating island, and saved more than their fair share of lives (well, by slaying anyone who crosses them). It goes without saying they're all fabulously wealthy. But with such perks, comes attention, usually of the bad sort.
Before I get into how I plan to challenge them next session, I'll give a little background on what's going on.
A draconic empire is returning to the PC's continent, which haven't been seen in millennia (long story). To help facilitate their dominance, the dragons have dispatched Ambassadors to several giant clans, intent on an alliance that will put down the humanoid kingdom. They have presented several powerful gifts to a storm giant jarl, but the agreement is tenuous.
So, the party has recently come to blows with giant raiders, and now are going to face down giants and dragons that are trying to halt their interference.
The tactics I have planned involve forcing the party to meet the giants on unfavorable terms whilst dragons drop boulders on their heads until they're weak enough to swoop in to capture (or kill, if they should resist). The giants are going to operate as long range artillery of sorts, discouraging them from a headlong charge.
The intent is to provide the party with a no-win scenario if they charge in guns blazing. I want them to expend some of their plentiful resources, and think outside the box!
TLDR: I'm going to smash my PC's if they simply try to solve problems by force alone. Hopefully they use their heads before boulders are dropped upon them!
