Shawn Mentioned his desire to build a 20th level adventure populated completely with Kobolds. So why not get the ball rolling here. It is a great way to think about making more typical monster last farther into a campaign. Grab one of the photos and "stat" out the kobold in it. Actual stats, or conceptual ones that are more of why that specific kobold can handle themselves in a higher level campaign. Some potential guidelines: 1. Name 2. Class 3. Ultimate Goals 4. Secondary Goals 5. Methods of achieving Goals 6. Name Fortress or base of operations 7. Alignment 8. Weapon/Spell of choice 9. Physical Description of Clothes/Armor Now it's Kobold time! As always add your own picture if you find one you like! A B C D E F G H I J

PICTURE B
1. Name: Tabik 2. Class: Rogue (Thief ) 3. Ultimate Goals: to become ridiculously rich, like dragons hoard rich 4. Secondary Goals: to find his long lost brother who disappeared in a elf raid and was assumed dead 5. Methods of achieving Goals: sneakiness and lies. Tabik is ultimately a coward and avoids conflict when possible. he's trying to find some stronger fighters to help achieve his goal and he might be considering stabbing them in the back when it's all over 6. Fortress or base of operations: A large cave in the mountains hidden behind some hanging miss and boulders. Calls it the Man Cave 7. Alignment: CN 8. Weapon/Spell of choice: daggers 9. Physical Description of Clothes/Armor: his clothes are shabby and mismatched. His baggy, patched pants are tucked into short, well worn boots and his studded leather tunic is covered in pouches and shiny things. A soft, handmade hat obscures his face and a bright red scarf leaps out at you from his neck

It's starts with one Kobold is reading the book in the pit he just dug.... "Hey guys... You every think there is more to like then digging pits and killing things that fall inside" "shut up and keep digging. That's crazy talk. Pits are the best next to shiny things" "No seriously, I am reading this book.." "OOOOOH MR FANCY PANTS IS TALKING AGAIN. LOOK GUYS I CAN READ. I CAN TURN PAGES. I AM SOOO SMART. SNORT SNORT" "shut up Percy! Just listen to this..." He starts reading and the kobolds stop digging as they gain interest... Climbing into the same hole to hear better around Butters sitting and listening intently. " Camera pans back from the hole to title screen Butters the Kobold cleric Pix the expert digger with twin pix axes Tremble the fun loving barb Scarf the expert in quick blade attacks Aegis the tank And Percy... Ha! hahaha! :3 right in my wheelhouse. I choose this beautiful machination of nightmares! 1. NameGrok'nor the Almighty Mad! 2. ClassWarlock 3. Ultimate GoalsTo revive his race as a whole and lead them into a new age of conquest and supremacy that his kind is meant to hold over the lesser races. 4. Secondary GoalsTo find out what happened to his old clan and to a much lesser extent -where the hells is that rotten smell coming from! It follows him everywhere! 5. Methods of achieving GoalsSending out his breatherin -the poor lost souls- to find ancient tombs and magic items that could be used in a mass resurrection ritual of his own devising! 6. Name Fortress or base of operationsLast drop cavern -leading into the Catacombs of Walshock, a long since abandoned village. 7. AlignmentNeutral 8. Weapon/Spell of choiceCircle of Death- warlock spell. His own razor sharp claws. 9. Physical Description of Clothes/ArmorHe wears no robes or clothing, and many would mistake him for any common undead kobold if it were not for the glowing mass of green ethereal energy that resonates from within him 10: HistoryGrok'nor was once a powerful Kobold warlock serving as his small packs witchdoctor, like all Kobold's they raided and pillaged and stole what they could to survive and for years this was more than good enough to sustain the growing group, However... A few years ago a group of adventures were hired by the townsfolk to put a stop to the constant incursions that their own guards (farmers with pitchforks and rusted old blades for the most part) had failed to cease. Understandably the adventures cleared out the caverns they used as a home rather quickly -wiping out almost the whole clan as they went until they came to the group's leader and Grok'nor himself -a battle quickly began and Grok'nor found that they would soon be slain. Pulling all the power he could from his pact bond he began to enact a powerful spell...until the wizard used acid arrows and melted the poor warlock to the bone... This however was not the end -the massive energies the Kobold had summoned caused a massive explosion wiping out almost everyone left within the cold darkness of the tunnels and Grok'nor rose once more, confused and disorientated. The events left him slightly mad - he believes himself to be still alive and whole as he used to be, he still eats and sleeps like he normally would and see's every other Kobold as skeletal horrors, he firmly believes that the adventures assault was not an isolated cleansing but a massive planned genocide to stop the kobolds growing power to threaten all of the man realm kingdoms, and so sets his plans into motion to resurrect his people with a half-baked ritual that will most likely just explode and kill everyone in a massive area...

I will attempt Kobold A. 1. Name: Niddh (short i, hard "th" sound) 2. Class: Fighter (Eldritch Knight, see 5e stats below) 3. Ultimate Goals: Destroy the human colony that exterminated his clan and stole their territory 4. Secondary Goals: Take the heads of the specific humans who killed his mate and children 5. Methods of achieving Goals: Sniping/Archery, torture, trap-laying 6. Name Fortress or base of operations: Mobile, though he has a nameless cave decorated with the skulls of less significant humans he has killed 7. Alignment: Lawful Evil 8. Weapon/Spell of choice: Sentient Shortbow "Foe-Bane," bound as his weapon bond (5e rules). Foe Bane is essentially an evil version of the Oathbow that takes delight in slaughtering those who have wronged its bearer, and pushes the bearer to greater acts of revenge. Foe-Bane also pushes its bearer to take offense at increasingly trivial slights over time. 9. Physical Description of Clothes/Armor: Niddh clothes himself exclusively in gear taken from the men he has killed. His armor belonged to a halfling ranger who specialized in killing kobolds, hired by the human colonists to lead the extermination efforts. Niddh saw the kobold skull that formed the pauldron on the halfling's armor and adopted a similar method of dressing himself in his trophies. The skulls he wears at his back are three of the seven adventurers responsible for the death of his loved ones in particular. 10. History: Niddh was once part of a relatively peaceful clan of kobolds living on a small island. Then, one day, humans came to the island and all but wiped out his tribe. Fleeing to a forbidden abandoned ruin on the island, Niddh found Foe-Bane and allowed its whispers to turn his cowardice to thoughts of vengeance. He swore revenge on both the colony as a whole and the men who killed his family in particular. For nearly a year, he harassed the colony's fringes, going into hiding and killing any who sought to confront him. But when he learned that the remaining men who had slain his family had left the island in hopes of adventuring elsewhere, he stowed aboard a ship and followed them to the mainland. Ever since, he has hunted humans, torturing those he has the opportunity to interrogate for information on the four adventurers whose lives he still seeks. 5e Stats (using Kobold PC race stats found here, starting with standard array) STR 12, DEX 20, CON 10, INT 15, WIS 17, CHA 9proficiency with bowyer/fletcher tools (makes his own arrows)Skills Survival, Intimidation , Stealth, MedicineFeats: Keen Mind, Observant, Sharp Shooter
Fighting Style: Archery, Second Wind, Action Surge, Eldritch Knight Archetype, 4 extra attacks, Indomitable Weapon Bond (Foe-Bane, mundane short sword), War Magic, Eldritch Strike, Arcane Charge, Improved War Magic Spellcasting: Cantrips (Friends, Shocking Grasp, Chill Touch), 1st Level Spells (Disguise Self, Feather Fall, Fog Cloud, Jump), 2nd Level Spells (Alter Self, Detect Thoughts, Misty Step), 3rd Level Spells (Fear, Fly, Nondetection), 4th level Spell (Greater Invisibility)

2. Class: Fighter (Eldritch Knight) Oh man! Eldritch Knight Kobold!? That's awesome. From the look of him, he seems to be a necromancer? I would love to play this character methinks.

I went back and added 5e stats. I did include a bit of necromancy, but probably not in the way you were expecting. Since he's on a mission for vengeance, I tried sticking to spells that would either (a) hide him or (b) help him get revenge.

So I think I am going to use image F. 1. Name: Dharmel The Pirate Slayer 2. Class: Fighter (5e Battle Master) 3. Ultimate Goals: Protect the secrets of Zharkerix (See my old dragon post)
4. Secondary Goals: Dharmel has a treasure lust that knows no bounds, and will stop at nothing to acquire something once he has set his gaze upon it. (possible motive for players to exploit?) 5. Methods of achieving Goals: Force is the only true path to anything. Dharmel has taught his warriors to be ruthless and efficient in executing their guerrilla style warfare against any invaders on their islands. Choosing to lead by example, Dharmel has slain countless warriors in surprise attacks and has many a scar to prove it. 6. Base of Operations: Surrounding the area known as The Amorean Trench are several small islands that were once used by the people of Amor as military outposts. The kobolds have taken these outposts as their own for generations (which is a while since kobolds live for about 135 years or so). 7. Alignment Chaotic Neutral 8. Weapon/Spell of choice A golden rapier he took from a pirate captain that gave him the scar across his muzzle. 9. Physical Description of Clothes/Armor Other than what you see in the picture above, Dharmel will frequently adorn himself with the treasures that he has collected. The gemstone in his head-dress is his most prized possession though. It marks the current chief of his clans and is a gift originally given by Zharkerix himself to the first kobold leader.

the picture on B is the epitome of 4th ed art. Fourth Ed has some pretty awesome art in places. Even if it is a bit cartoonish sometimes.

These are great! I love the additional pictures kjmagle. Saw a lot of those when I went diggin on ye olde interwebs. grimmhelm does Grok'nor the Almighty Mad only see other Kobolds as undead or does he see other races as undead as well? Interesting either way, and a great backstory. galakan your post makes me indescribably happy, as I am a sucker for the tie backs to old DM-Nastics. What kind of ships do the Kobolds use, or do they stick mainly to the islands and wait for travelers to come to them in search of their treasure? retsamnoegnud Niddh is ready to see a table and plague some players! Would be interesting to tie it directly to one or more of them, and possibly make it an early level encounter that the players kill Kobolds and eventually Niddh hunts them. DM Rowan Would Tabik be a potential NPC quest giver for a group of adventurers? What could Tabik offer in return for helping find his long lost brother?

Grok'nor See's Kobolds and variation of the species as nightmarish undead horrors. The other Kobold's think he's barmy which is good because he is, but he's powerful and seems to know what hes doing so they follow him - despite his occasional breakdowns at the state of his "once proud and powerful people". Gotta say though, i'm loving all of these! nothing like a good DM/Player community to get the DM mind churning!

Though unless you have players who are likely to run from a fight instead of dig in, it means some minor backstory tweaking, it would be well worth it to make the fight personal!

What kind of ships do the Kobolds use, or do they stick mainly to the islands and wait for travelers to come to them in search of their treasure? Hmmm. I am thinking they would use scavenged pieces from either the ruins they live in, or the ships they plunder (maybe both). With those materials they would make these long skinny canoes that skirt silently across the water in order to ambush ships. I am thinking that they didn't figure this out on their own though. Rather the dragon they worship taught them to be more resourceful.

DM Rowan Would Tabik be a potential NPC quest giver for a group of adventurers? What could Tabik offer in return for helping find his long lost brother? he he yeah, Tabik isn't too developed cause for some reason i didn't realize they were NPCs //derp Yeah well the thing about Tabik is that he's selfish but ultimately, he's still a coward. perhaps, depending on your players, he could try to steal from them and when caught promise to do something for them or help them in exchange for his life. Party would have to intimidate/bribe him constantly to keep him on track. I'm picturing there's some information they need that only someone his size or another kobold could get or maybe they're trying to get him to betray his own employer or whatever? Alternatively, while walking through the forest or something, they encounter Tabik being chased by larger, more dangerous enemies. He begs for help and when they kill the beasts he realizes they're pretty strong so he asks if they'll help him find his brother. He promises a bunch of treasure (which he actually owns but has no intention of sharing (the best lies have a seed of truth)) and if they agree and find said brother, he tries to escape before they can return for the treasure. Maybe they catch him and his bro packing bags with gold or stealing they're belongings the night before they're supposed to lead them to the treasure. Wow thanks for prompting me! I never would have written all that otherwise!
