Though I've been DMing for public play events for awhile now, I haven't been able to run a home game since September. I'm finally getting started this Saturday, and I wanted to share my idea for the intro session, since Chris and Mike just did the "you are not in a tavern" episode.
First, I want to disclose that I'm not sure where this idea came from. When I started writing it, it felt like my own original idea, yet I have a feeling I heard it proposed somewhere, I just can't recall where. It should be fun for everyone, regardless.
Anyway, before we actually begin I'm going to have the players randomly determine a trinket from the list in the PHB. Whether the characters know one another or not, they all have a common ally from their pasts. Whatever the item is, it was sent to them by this old friend with instructions to keep it safe. At the onset of the campaign, the characters have been informed he recently died. They head to his hometown to pay their respects, bumping into one another along the way. Upon arriving in town, they learn that he was actually murdered.
One of the trinkets (whichever is most appropriate, we haven't rolled for them yet) will act as a device to reveal/decode a secret message in their common ally's journal. Each of the other trinkets is a key or clue to secret stashes which contain fragments of a powerful artifact. The murderer is attempting to get to these stashes himself, and throughout the campaign will attempt to take the PC's trinkets, or disrupt them as they try to recover the fragments.
Aside from a plausible way to get strangers to cooperate, the trinkets are also an exercise in creativity for me. How am I going to use "Griffon Grease" as a plot device if that's what a player rolls? How about a glass vial filled with nail clippings? I guess I'll just have to wait and see! I'll keep you guys posted with major developments.
