(hope the image shows up!)
I've had this fellow sitting in my files for a while and decided to use him as an NPC in my next game. He is an astronomer in a desert observatory. He's entering the story as a helpful NPC, but the heroes will learn later on that he is one of the few remaining archmages. In my campaign spellcasters "broke the world." Most have either fled (to a new moon that is basically a pocket dimension), died, or gone into hiding over the centuries.
So collective-mind, any thoughts on a 3.5 race for this fellow? Ideally something long lived so I don't have to finagle why he's still alive.

Looking just from the shoulders up, I'm thinking maybe a non-evil neogi? He'd need to have a spider/crab body (and a pet umber hulk) to actually be a neogi, but you could use neogi stats/abilities to describe a race that's largely unknown, and just ignore any of the stuff referring to them being bug-worms.

My initial thought, and after doing a little looking and thinking I'm sticking with it, was to have them be a troll. You say that in your world spellcasters "broke the world" it could be that somehow one of them made a very intelligent and non-evil troll. Depending on how you want trolls to work in your world you could have it so that their regenerative properties give them a very long lifespan its just that typically they live a very violent life that doesn't afford for living very long.
