Hey guys! I am excited to post another piece of lore from my world of Lyrentia! Lemme know what you think. I am more than willing to change and tweak things since I am currently play-testing this setting and love hearing what people think. Again, these notes are kinda like a blur to me since I spend so much time lookin at them. If a sentence or word seems misspelled or oddly phrased just let me know and I will change it.
Also..I am really hoping that none of my players are hiding on here because there are some major spoilers in this one. Sorry for the long post! The rest will be shorter hopefully
For those that are curious I have the first portion here:
Part One
Religion:
The gods of this world are widely regarded as real. After the cataclysm hit many of the survivors assume that it was a punishment from them, and they are not necessarily wrong. Four gods exist in this world and are simply called The Family.
Segadis (The Father)
How Scripture Speaks Of Him
The god of War and Justice. He stands watch over his daughter’s prison, preventing all of her demonic creations from escaping their captivity. He is old and wise, valuing patience and a good plan over brash action.
Reality
When his children began to create life, he saw their creation as an affront to everything that he had given them. In an effort to punish them he slowly began to corrupt and change their creations into demonic malformations of what they were. He also created the mighty dragon, to prey on all his children created. When he saw that this plan was failing, and their creations simply grew stronger, he attempted to end it. His power is what caused the cataclysm eons ago, and would have destroyed the world if not for the selfless acts of his daughter. He is the true god of Chaos.
Jozdae (The Mother)
Reality
The only god that is exactly what they say she is. Eons ago she created the universe, although doing so had unforeseen consequences. The first known creation also led to the death of the first god. As planets formed and stars grew in the cosmos, Jozdae slowly withered and lost her power. What remains of her forms the planet where Lyrentia stands today. Remnants of her power seep into mortals granting them druidic abilities. Her presence gave life to the simple animals and some of the monsters of the universe, however she was never able to grant them free will.
Rendalas (The Son)
How Scripture Speaks Of Him
Rendalas is the bringer of life and order. He created all of the races of this world and brings balance between them and the natural world around them. He first created the spirit world and all of the beings that live there, then used their essence to create intelligent species. The first of these were the noble dragons of legend.
Reality
So the scriptures got some of it right. After the death of his mother, Rendalas set forth to try and see her plan to fruition by creating sentient life. He created the spirit world in which he was able to make a representation for any and all emotions and ideas he knew. In doing so he created magic and the Arcane. The spirits thrived, but never truly gained a will of their own. They were always tied to whatever they embodied, and the polarized emotions caused the spirit world to constantly be in flux. Rendalas’ creation peaked his sister’s curiosity and she helped him shape and control this living thing he had made. Together they formed the physical realm as a shell on top of the spirit world.
Zalphiet (The Daughter or The Sister)
How Scripture Speaks Of Her
The Sister is The Great Deceiver. After her brother breathed true life into the world she grew jealous. She began to try to mimick him as a younger sibling would, but all of her creations turned out deformed and uncontrollable. Soon, she lashed out at her brother. Creating legions of demons and horrendous abominations, she brought the physical world to its knees and almost defeated her brother. It was only the combined strength of him AND his father that managed to force her back and imprison her in the underworld.
Reality
The only one of the family to inherit Jozdae’s kindness was her daughter Zalphiet. After her mother’s death she helped shield her brother from their father’s wrath and convinced Rendalas that their mother’s goal was not suicide, but creation. While she kept their father pacified, her brother began his work on the spirit world and it eventually got too much to handle. With just a touch of her power Zalphiet helped form the physical world and she devised a way to create truly sentient life. All of this, the siblings thought they did in secret, but Segadis watched and waited for his moment. This led to the Chaos War and eventually Zalphiet’s ultimate sacrifice.
The Chaos War
This is a chapter of the world that history cannot and will not remember. As the newly created physical world flourished, Segadis slowly began to try to corrupt and pervert it with his own creations. Much to his dismay, this only made the creatures there even more resilient. His Orc hordes were pushed back, and his dragons never seemed to get far enough in their conquest and always had to retreat and lick their wounds.
The great Father soon resorted to a different strategy and began corrupting his children’s creations rather than simply creating his own. He started with the simplest of the races, the Charg. They were one of his children’s first creations, and the most primal. He slowly tapped into their minds and gave them a bloodlust the likes of which even his own Orcs were afraid of. This army proved to be much more of a challenge to his children, but it was still not enough. Segadis began to corrupt more and more of the races of this world, and eventually had representatives of each of the races at his command. Yet despite this, his children’s creations pushed his forces back and his armies ended up in secluded pockets of the world where they couldn’t grow.
At last Segadis knew that he needed to finish things himself. He attacked the world with his raw power, wiping out city after city. The mortal races fled in panic, and their fear only made the God Of Chaos stronger. Zalphiet saw the destruction and resolved that no more of her and her brother’s children would perish. As Segadis gathered his strength into what would be the final blow to the universe that killed his wife, the Daughter began to seep her power into every mortal left. One at a time she began to influence the minds of her creations, making them see her as a villain and her father as a god of Justice. As the minds of her followers began to worship the Father for something he was not, his power waned. He withered and shrunk and started to become trapped. In a desperate thrash, Segadis let forth one final blast at the world, causing the Great Cataclysm. Much to the Father’s dismay, his power had already been drained too much and Rendalas had managed to erect barriers to contain the damage. This barrier is known today as The Gate.
And in that instant the world was forever changed. Zalphiet’s power continued to wane as more and more of her creations villainized her. She used this to erect the underworld, trapping her father and his most dangerous creations in a plane created by the collective worship of all of her children. Now she sits and watches from this plane, ensuring that her father remains trapped.
And for a time, this seemed to work.
