I created an evil druidic circle that created this Pulse-Thorn plant which is a invasive, thorny, vine-like plant with a single stalk and large flower. These plants bloom during full moons from the start of spring to the beginning of winter. Each flower has a single large stalk that grows in the middle. On this stalk grows a cluster of pods, which burst releasing spores capable of rendering creatures unconscious (on a failed Con save) in a 10' radius around the stalk. Once a creature(s) are knocked out the plan then drags its meal towards the stalk and envelopes everything in thick durable leaves, sealing and creating an inside chamber around the stalk. At this point the thick leaves release a digestive acidic slime, this slime breaks down all biological material except for other parts of the plant. Once all biological material is broken down and absorbed it then discards anything left around the plant (anything metallic/stone/magically enchanted).
When each Pulse-Thorn blooms a small thornlike spine protrudes from the pods. When any creature gets too close (usually within 5' of the stalk) the pod bursts and sends the spine firing at the creature. Once struck by a thorn the creature has up to 8 weeks to live as the plant slowly gestates inside the host. The infected creature begins to crave raw vegetable and meat and starts drinking water in unusual amounts. They also begin to sweat an alluring plant like aroma which temporarily boosts their charisma. The host feels no pain as the plant grows and eventually bursts from them due to a toxin that is released by the seedling that nulls the pain.
The DC of the spores is what I consider 'somewhat challenging': DC 14
Gestation period: 1d8 weeks, each week the host suffers 1 point of CON damage that cannot be healed until the seedling is destroyed. (this can be done in various ways left up to the DM, I usually use some medicinal tonic). Once the plant 'hatches' the creature is considered dead, methods of revival still work if they can recover parts of the host from the area around the new plant.
Just thought I'd share something that is non-XP related that can still kill PC's... lol I'm a bastard for this I know, I've had PC's die to something like this before because they didn't pay attention to the symptoms. Afterwards they immediately burned every plant like this that they encountered.
