So I don't know how many of you knew of the Tabletop Connect VTT, it was a VTT from a kickstarter a while back that looked very promising, while I didn't find it in time to kickstart it I was able to Pre-order and gain beta builds. The builds were very nice, and I really liked the VTT and it's features, even though it was only in Beta. Anyway, a few days ago Carl (the TTC Dev) announced that TTC had been acquired by SmiteWorks who develop Fantasy Grounds. While I don't like Fantasy grounds very much in it's current state (and pricing plan) I do hope that Carl will improve it so that I will like it (but unless they have some major UI and data input overhauls I doubt I'll enjoy it any time soon). I feel that TTC was so far ahead of FG in terms of UI and the fully 3D map/experience is awesome. FG is just a bad/restrictive implementation of RPG Table online IMO. Anyway the details are here: www.enworld.org/forum/showthread.php?469663-FANTASY-GROUNDS-Goes-3D-With-TABLETOP-CONNECT&p=6716239&viewfull=1#post6716239Anyway, Apologies for the FG Negativity

So I have never seen this, and that makes me sad I somehow missed this. That's an interesting purchase though, and it will be interesting to see what happens with it. I am kind of with you on FG as of now. I am a fully licensed Ultimate user, but I don't know. I love the concepts and the ideas, but some of it is down right whack to work with. I want to do certain things, that to me I would think would be easy, but they aren't. Now, if I was coding and making a VTT, I would certainly be moving towards a 3D layout. In my opinion the next gen way to roleplay may be with an Oculus Rift on your head.

Yeah, I mainly used RPG Table Online for VTT D&D but as it's currently being overhauled (and has been for over 6 months now!) I had to use FG and it was such a step backwards, while the things you 'could do' were more advanced, it was just such a hassle to do anything it was so counter productive. From what I understand Carl is being put on the team to convert FG over to Unity, so hopefully it will be better once it's been put there, then it will just get better. However it is the 'official Wizards of the coast VTT' now, so I don't hold my hopes too high for it. good god, DnD in 3D. Take my rupies! Sadly this wont be happening for quite a while!

I am sure it is closer than we all realize. Besides technology is a funny thing, some years it improves drastically while others its a drag. I remember when the internet JUST CAME OUT, and this crazy thing called dial-up. I also remember the first computures with their 5.5" floppy drives and very limited capabilities. NOW look where we are!

I am not really thinking of it in a grandiose manner yet. One day maybe we wear suits and walk through worlds swinging fakes swords, etc. Before that though I think of other cool possibilities for things like the Oculus Rift. Take "Tabletop Simulator" for example. ( youtu.be/jtsPXM-OzpE) Say that was setup and enhanced for the Oculus, where you can virtually "sit" around a table with friends thousands of miles away. I personally think things like this will be pretty rad, and be interested to see what comes out of it. While you aren't immersed in a fully virtual world, I see some cool possibilities. Image a built out dungeon, and you just move the party through it as their pieces move. While you aren't being the "actor" you are right there and see everything from that perspective if you want.

Thanks for sharing! I hadn't seen Tabletop Simulator before, but my first impression is that I would prefer it to most virtual tabletops. I can handle all the mechanical and narrative stuff readily enough, so many of the extras in Roll20 and FG just get in the way, but I like having a solid visual representation for combat stuff. This looks like it can do exactly what I would want, and the interface seems intuitive enough as well.

I'm a FG DM and love the interface due to ease of being able quickly create complex encounters due to drag and drop capability, robust effect management, and a great combat tracker that links easily to maps and other things. I am excited to see how the VTT develops. I will certainly consider moving to it due to 3d graphics and added dimension of other player avatars. Pretty cool to me!
