This exercise takes its cue from Venture Maidens Episode 97: Missed Connections to ask some questions. Eventually, we all face needing to have the ultimate planning session. The characters have fought this, that, and the other but now it's time to plan ahead to battle the big bad. Often this is the final battle against whatever the big bad can bring to bear, and involves everything that the players can bring to bear too. Let the planning begin! 1. Where have the players chosen to put together their best laid plans? (Build a location?) 2. Who else have they invited into their planning session? (Build an NPC?) 3. What resource do they need that they don’t have? (Create a magic item?) 4. You do you!

1. Where have the players chosen to put together their best laid plans? The basement of Bufo’s parents house. - Bufo Merk, Lyrine Eldrain, and Elza-Swish-Tail have always made their plans in the basement of Bufo’s parents house; Mr. Merk is a prominent merchant and owns the only trade caravan near Wherington, he is never home and is exhausted when he is, Mrs. Merk is the best cook around and has doted on the three since they were kids. Plus there’s more books than the library, better goods than the shops, and it’s all just gathering dust.
2. Who else have they invited into their planning session? Marryl Merk. In an attempt to win his notice, Bufos has invited his father. - Mr. Merk hasn’t been in his basement for years, but has consented to “humor” Bufo for but a moment to hear how he plans to help with this Dragon problem, not until he steps foot below does he realize Bufo and her friends are serious.
3. What resource do they need that they don’t have? The net of Lotar, lost beneath the waves of Lotar bay still holding Brazen the Bronze. - The Net was crafted by Lotar the Lofty (later Mad Lotar) to catch and hold Brazen, a bronze dragon, as to finally get to his research without the dragon complaining day in and day out about his magical pollution and how it was disrupting the ecosystem (it is his bay after all, he built his tower there, and he could do what he liked).
- The Net is crafted from the weave of all magic, unbreakable and impassable by magics. A mechanical net-in-the-box was constructed to hold and launch the net.
4. You do you!- Murger Burgher, burghermaster and founder of Murgersburgh, has been trying to ruin Wherington and usurp their fields. With the aid of Ruindolph the Red he may finally do it. The adult red dragon has decided it likes the caravans of Merk’s Mercantile and has plundered 2 caravans already, if they lose a 3rd caravan the whole town could be in a carrot soup with no carrots.
- Our three adventurers have read the histories of the area and came across the tale of Lotar slays the Dragon: how 100 years ago Lotar the Lofty trapped Brazen the Bronze and sank her to a watery grave, and Brazen’s curse upon Lotar Bay: how the ghost of Brazen the Bronze rose again 50 years later only to find Mad Lotar dead only hours before by a group of adventurers … [long story short Brazen slowly died but her spirit couldn’t leave the net until possessed a fish and swam out of the net and has haunted the corrupted bay as an angry specter since] … , they have found a single page on the construction of the net written by Lotar. It is a magical net able to spring from a hand held box capable of catching and containing a dragon.
- All they need from Mr. Merk is for him to hold off the 3rd caravan for a week and a few potions and things to aid them as they get into Lotar’s dilapidated and very haunted lighthouse, find the box, then swim down to the bottom of Lotar Bay (either avoiding or facing Brazen’s spectral ghost) and wind the net in. Then they can all set up a trap for the “dragon problem” together.
