Most of my mainstay shopkeepers are winks to things in pop culture. In particular, my general goods shop is the Quick Stop from Clerks, renamed "Short Rest", complete with Dante and Randal as the shopkeepers, just referred to by the characters last names. Anyway, I figured if I was going to have Dante and Randal, then I also needed Jay and Silent Bob outside, and I made them a front for the Theives' Guild. The actual head of the guild is a golden minotaur stand-in for Mooby, the Mickey proxy from Dogma. My group's rogue has completed a quest line to be inducted into the guild, so I've prepped some cards with her immediate need-to-knows of what she gets mechanically from that. The lower four cards are the wares available from Jay and Silent Bob that she'll get a discount on if she wants.

You, sir....are a veritable genius.... Ha! Thanks. I tend to think it's a little more fun for me if I can throw in these very thinly veiled references. Also helps me to remember who the characters and and what they sound like if I have that anchor.

I love throwing in characters from books and film! Many are obscure enough that my players aren't familiar, so that's points for me as the DM. Other times, I inadvertently recreate a character, which my players spot and end up enjoying greatly, which is fine by me! Most recently, I had a little old Level 20 Monk who is the head of a temple, and he ended up just being Bumi from ATLA, though slightly less wacky...

Love all of this. I usually don't plan the pop culture references until the moment they make sense. That said, I now have a bar to measure my premade pop culture references against.

I think my players will need to run into a monarch called Czar Czo-Czay...but no one will know who the monarch actually is...there will be a confusing cast of characters, each of whom could be Czo-Czay...

Just promise us you run Mallrats as a dungeon crawl somehow.
