So I started running a group of friends through the Worlds Largest Dungeon module on Roll 20. Mainly to kill time (we're all in education, therefore not working and bored out of of our minds). I didn't do the best job setting up the adventure. We wanted to start playing as soon as possible. So the dungeon is being used as a prison by many of the local countries cause what goes in never comes out.
So party wakes up in a large room and adventure commences. It's a dungeon crawl in the purest sense. Room to room, battle to battle, which I can admit is fun from a tactical, war gamey perspective, and I want to keep a bit of that. Here's the main issue. I'm running 5e, the mod is 3.5. trying to update it on the fly works, as i can balance the difficulty fairly well. But i want to convert this to a sandbox story, use the dungeon mostly as is, perhaps a few tweaks. Next session I want them to run into a "town" to launch the sandbox. This is my creative licence. There is no town in the mod so far.
So in a single dungeon, designed to take players from level 1-20, that includes every monster in the SRD. The question is; What the hell does this town look like?
I know its not just playable races. Any intelligent, low level monster probably has a presence here (kobolds, goblinoids etc), and probably outnumber the normal races (human, elf dwarf, etc).
I have some ideas of my own but I'd like to see what ya'll come up with, things I haven't thought of, interesting quirks, adventure hooks, the like.
To get your imaginations going this town pops up at the end of a massive maze. The adventurer's are running out of rations and a massive door with two bored guards (race as of yet undetermined but anything from kobolds to elves to troglodytes) at the entrance are surprised to see the adventurers come through.
