Hi everyone, first post here...
I'm working on a game where a (big Godzilla sized) ancient red dragon lich is going to be raised and take out the city that has been built within its skeleton. Part of the magic that raises it from its slumber is a device buried well beneath the dragon that is kickstarted by some kobolds in order to send the dragon after Garl Glittergold and try to get Kurtulmak released.
Now, a magical side effect of this being about to happen is that magic is going to become very chaotic inside the dragon city. What kinds of crazy chaotic warps would you use? This skeleton city is in the desert, I'm thinking of a huge tree growing through the skeleton, an obelisk, things like that. But what smaller, more subltle changes within the city itself would you throw in? Another idea I had was to have a beast head mounted inside of a tavern, and suddenly it starts speaking and WON'T STOP - at which time, I'll pull up a Robin Williams standup routine and play it loud enough to be bothersome for the PC's while in the tavern. So, what else do you have?
I would ratchet up the magical effects bit by bit. In my magical system, increasing vital, organic, frondescence would have effects like the tree you mention. I picture an enormous 'Dracaena cinnabari'
The following is all based on my homebrew.
In my cosmology the Dragon Tree is associated with 3 essences of growth, wildfire and venom so I would flavor my effects along those themes.
Rapid plant growth - a blooming desert.
Epiphany delivered to sleepers and sages.
Roots upsetting walls and structures
Canopy joining roofs across streets
High spirits and spreading romance
Red ivy spreading up walls and trees
Bonfires spontaneously igniting and spreading
People pursuing religion with zeal and conviction
Feelings of infinite possibility and potential
Yellowing stone and plants
Venomous creatures spreading and swarming
Corruption of water and foodstuff
Bile fouling wells and sickening people
Predation and attacks on the weak and needy
There would also be weather & environmental effects/traps, based on elements of light, fire, earth and life: Desert Blindness
Ravenous Insect Swarms
For planar portals, I would expect them to open to the Feywild and Abyss.
