So I was raised using the AD&D rules but have returned with the popularity and ease of 5e. I'm introducing a new younger generation and some older ones to the creativity of D&D. The younger and new players are slowly being introduced on how to play their characters. Knowing this; how much would someone guide them on combat and general play? I do indicate that "meta" game thinking is not really the best way to play and that they should really try to embrace the role playing aspect of the game. They have shown quite a bit of resourcefulness dealing with traps, puzzles and combat encounters. Also, when dealing with XP is the trend now to reward the party with XP in solving puzzles, resolving encounters in a different manner other than combat? I'd appreciate any input or constructive ideas.
