I just started to listen to DMB, so I am still early on in the episodes. It was last week or so when I was listening to Creation and Inspiration II and they had this idea of a wabbajack based item and it reminded me of an item we had in a campaign I played in, which was just that, a wabbajack based item. The first time I used it, and the time I used it the most was actually in one of the dungeons, so I figured I would share the entire story of the dungeon. Note I don't know all the effects of the item, only those that I had gotten during our game.
So there was this Orb that I got off of a party member that had passed on, I believe that he had obtained it from the same place my last player died in a game of jenga (but that is another story entirely.) Entering this dungeon, we already had to go through three half dragons to get into this place where warriors used to go through to prove their might. We were already a bit injured, so heading into our first battle we walked into more than we could handle.
Inside the first hall waited a fire elemental. This hall was only about five feet across, so entering into battle we were in a straight line. Since we were all nicely lined up, the elemental on it's turn kept darting up and down the hall, setting us on fire on it's way, doing more damage than I had time to heal. Finally getting desperate I pulled out the Chaos orb. Holding it tight and concentrating on it, suddenly this green bolt of energy hit the elemental.. and then... *cluck* There was something pecking my feet. The elemental had turned into a chicken. Not knowing if this was polymorph, true polymorph, or something else entirely. After the battle thought we couldn't afford to take chances. Locking the chicken in the hall we fought him in, and taking a long rest in the main entrance. The next day when we returned it was still a chicken, so we picked it up and brought it with us in one of our players back packs.
The next time in this dungeon we used it was towards the end. We could see a chest that we assumed ad the key to the final room, but three enemies stood in our way. Before even entering in combat I thought that we should try and take at least one of them out before the battle began. Before I tell you this effect be aware that I am a war cleric that uses a bow most of the time and stays to the back of the group. When I used it this time my place was switched with the enemy in the middle in which I was aiming at. So now I am between two enemies and the two front liners are 50 ft away with one of the enemies. Still somehow we managed to win the battle.
The third and final time I used it in that dungeon was in the last room. We were fighting the boss of the room, the one protecting the artifact that we needed. The boss that we faced was an young gold dragon, needless to say our party of three level 8 characters weren't doing too hot against it, even if it was given a severe debuff to make it manageable. Again it was out of desperation that I used it. The dragon was severely injured but we couldn't stand it much longer. I was hoping to turn it into a chicken, but instead it became drunk. The dragon started stumbling around earning disadvantage on all of its attacks, which won us the battle.
Asides from the changing places in a battle, the Chaos Orb was seeming quite useful, so the next four times I used it (And the only other times I used it) guess what I got.... I changed places, every single time.
On the bright side, as soon as we finished the battle, the dragon reincarnated into a wormling, in which I made friends with and smuggled out of the dungeon, naming him Tseng. We did however give the chicken elemental back to the half dragon guardians at the gate however.
But yes that is the adventures with a Wabbajack based item. From what I can tell the DM had a list of 20 effects that it could do, and we would simply roll a D20 and see what we got. It wasn't always good, but it was funny none the less, and sometimes actually useful.
