So as I come close to finishing my first ever campaign with my group I have started putting together the next campaign and have been watching videos on how to build master plots and having the world be constant and every changing regardless of what the group is doing (if they are in a different area, obviously they effect the world around them) and in doing so did a fair amount of homework on Dragons, the different kinds, mindsets, etc.
I think I have settled on wanting my Master Plot to center on the Iron Dragons finally making their move to claim dominion over all non dragonkind. (I read in a few spots this is the main thought and motivation of the Iron Dragons? Not necessarily in a kill everything kind of way but more of a "Hey, we are best suited to run this world" type of deal and that they are the kinds of dragons most apt to take human form and walk amongst the lesser races to gain insight and blah blah blah. Which will also make for sweet npc twists once they reveal themselves, and inherently the party may find themselves siding with the dragons depending on how I present the logic.
So my question is this, I know DnD is largely a game of interpretation but I don't want to to do a disservice to all of the lore that has come before me, so would this work for Iron Dragons? I was thinking of using Graughlothor as the main 'antagonist' and from what I read I can rationalize Coubalt Dragons would be on board with helping, I know Red Dragons wouldn't.
so what types of dragons would I believably be able to incorporate into this story line? Is there a better named Dragon character to use for the main antagonist? Any thoughts on this would be great as I am trying to flesh out the idea and I know there is a lot about dragons and playing their personalities correctly.
I am currently planning on 'fooling' my party into thinking a doppelganger story arch is the main plot but at some point or after completion of this story arch the main plot will be more readily presented. But I am making a world encapsulating plot with the dragons which will see dragons, in lesser form, stationed throughout trying to further their overall goal.
I hope this makes sense and looking forward to some good convo.
Addendum I was looking at Iron Dragons as Ferrous before they were upgraded to full metallic in 4th edition for their mindset
