This isn't my idea so I don't mind calling it fantastic.
My hubby has just brought in a merchant that deals in enchanted objects called Hendy. He's smarmy in every way - that is to say, he's one of those guys who is basically physically repulsive but believes he is seriously hot stuff. He 'flirts' with all the characters while managing to make it just a bit creepy and uncomfortable (hilarious role-play). He also makes it abundantly clear that you are basically dirt to him if you don't have money to spend. And of course, he always speaks of himself in the 3rd person. "Remember, Hendy loves to see you back anytime!"
However, the things that make Hendy my new favourite NPC.
1) His store can literally appear behind ANY door (think: Howl's Moving Castle). He's usually in towns but we've also found him behind a door in an underground dungeon. The first time he appeared in a new town, we (the players) were completely like "wait....didn't we meet this guy...hold on...are we in the same town?!"
2) He loves to give out 'free gifts' to his favourite customers with every purchase. When you first receive it, it looks and feels like some sort of small amazing magical crystal but if you investigate the item or try to attune to it, you quickly realize it's a glass 'Hendy' paperweight with his store name magically engraved inside. (yes...possibly the most useless promotional item for an adventuring party ever unless you are a sling user
)
So yes...I love Hendy and I wanted to share him in case you are looking for a fresh NPC for your campaign. XD
