I've been playing around with the idea that it takes a reaaaaly long time to learn magic, at least from a wizardry point of view.
In my world of Teranno only the "Eternal" races have the capability to become max level wizards. Elves, Gnomes, Dwarves, Halflings and maybe studious half-elves would be able to live long enough to learn all of the arcane secrets available; this leaves Humans, Dragonborn, Teiflings and Half-Orcs to fend for themselves.
This, I suppose implies that cantrips and first level spells would take about 50 years to get the hang of, then once you have unlocked the ability and knowledge to cast arcane spells, the rest comes naturally.
So what about Eldritch knights and Arcane tricksters? the spell casting cap built into the classes is perfect for these. In the non-elf Kingdom of Hamelhir of Terrano the current king is a high level Eldritch Knight, with his royal studies being both arcane and of the sword. We can also assume that because the ceiling of these sub classes is lower, the barrier of entry might be lower..(?) or this could be a case of the hand-wave...
Speaking of hand waving.. what to do about the Bard.... they go up to ninth level on the wizard spell list. bit I'm not sure if I want to prohibit this class. My current train of thought is that because music and rhythm uses different parts of the brain, and it's generally easier to memorize a song than it is to memorize an essay, this might be a viable arcane route available to non-eternals.
Sorcerors and Warlocks I don't feel need to study as they are internalized and outsourced, they would not apply to these restrictions.
The same will go for the divinely sourced magics of the druid, ranger, cleric and paladin.
This sprouted a villain for me too though, simply put, a human who is so bent on being as powerful as an elf he will do anything he needs to.. possibly even become a lich... classic.
Please share any feedback you might have! Sorry my thought process quickened pace at the end, I've got to wrap this up. I'll probably edit later.
Thanks!
