I absolutely loved this episode and all the One Eyed Jack Cameos. And a big thanks to Mitch for reading my question on the mailbag of holding.
Now I'm going to give my tale of a treasure map campaign I will eventually do and combine all of my favourite DMB episodes, Pirates, Deep Deep Down, Heists, and Treasure maps. I'll try and just give the bare bone skeletons version with a choose your own character/villain/kingdom vibe.
It's a wide world, full of Islands and different nations, pirates and Royal Navy's, strange creatures and humans alike. The largest of these Island Nations is called...Kingdom X.
80 years ago, the Royal Navy of Kingdom of X, returning from a successful war campaign, loaded down with the riches of its conquest, is SWALLOWED BY A KRAKEN. Now I don't mean a giant squid. I mean a continental size Kraken. All the gold and riches, including the King himself and his precious heirlooms that he wore upon him, went down into the Kraken's belly. The prince, now King, floating off on a piece of driftwood, survives...but with indefinite madness. Without the Royal Navy, the Kingdom of X falls, and the normal, relatively calm seas of this world, are dominated by warring kingdoms.
Fast forward 80 years, your PC characters are part of a motley crew of pirates/smugglers/mercenaries. Your captain has set up a secret meeting...a meeting with potential riches. The meeting is actually with the Prince (not the driftwood prince, his son). The Kingdom X family has been in exile ever since the incident, and there is a large bounty on any of their heads. The Prince is looking to restore his rightful rule, and to do that, he needs the heirlooms that were on his Grandfather when he was swallowed, some sort of McGuffin X. He has heard rumours that the Kraken was slain, by some mighty heroes from another campaign. He offers up a large amount of gold to get you going, but promises a share in the riches that you will find in the Krakens Belly. The prince has learned, that One Eyed Jack on the Island of Kingdom Z, has clues to a map to where the Kraken lays upon the sea floor.
And so begins a chase, from Island to Island, putting together pieces of a treasure map, that will eventually lead them to the right spot, where our PC's will have to dive and enter inside the Kraken.
Though inside the Kraken, all isn't as it seems.
The Kraken's stomach is ruled by a Beholder/Dragon/Aboleth. And it is jealously guarding all the riches the Kraken swallowed in its lifetime. So begins a heist to steal the heirloom, and as much riches as possible and escape the Kraken.
