Hi everyone, I need some advice on running "The Sunless Citadel" from TFtYP 5e. It is meant for 1st level PC's, but I want to run it for a party of 5 5th level PC's, 2 of which are new to the game.
If I run it as is, I'm pitting kobolds and goblins against 5th level PC's and I know it will be way too easy. My question is this? How do I bump up the difficulty without reworking the whole thing? Do I bump up the hp of the kobolds and goblins, or do I swap them out for monsters with a higher CR, and what monsters would be recommended?
I know this won't help, but I plan on starting this adventure on Saturday night, so I have tonight, tomorrow night and all of Saturday to prep for this, which doesn't leave you, my fellow DM's, much time to reply with some desperately needed advice. Thanks in advance, from myself as well as my players!

Alrighty, well I figure I'll expand the number of monsters per encounter and boost their health a bit, maybe some better armor and weapons.... I don't wanna change the monsters out and make it too difficult and and screw up the balance. We'll see how this goes...

Swap out the standard kobolds/goblins with stronger NPCs from the Monster Manual or Volo's and call them kobolds/goblins. Volo's Guide to Monsters also expanded on these monsters to have stronger variants that you can use. Sometimes, increasing HP/AC will just drag the fight out without actually adding difficulty. Hope that helps!

Yeah, I agree with what dmsam said. It'll likely help with the balance without messing too much of the flavor that you're going for, plus the PCs might find it a bit odd that they had to work harder to fight kobolds and goblins than they thought! A little mystery is always fun.

Well our first session of the sunless citadel started much later than expected, so it was only a couple of hours, plus we had 3 additional PC's join in (I can't say no to kids that wanna play)... So they got next to nothing done, lol. Thanks for the advice on volo's guide, I just got it for Christmas and haven't had a chance to really get into that book yet. I'll look into swapping out monsters.
