We're nearing the end of a major confrontation with a big baddie. Our paladin nearly takes him out but leaves BB enough health to hit one more time. The paladin goes down and starts rolling his death saves (5e). I'm playing a bard and cast sleep to take out a bunch of baddies and then our ranger ends the fight shortly thereafter. All of us are completely out of spells and potions so we start trying to stabilize our paladin with medicine rolls. I fail but the ranger and sorcerer get him back to 1 HP. We're all recovering, exploring, looting, etc.. in the temple-like room we fought in. The ranger wanders over to a small chest, checks for traps, is quite confident there are none, and proceeds to spring one that sprays acid over the entire party. Paladin goes down AGAIN. We drag him out of the room and I try to stabilize him again. I roll a CRIT FAIL (AUGH!!) - which prompts another death saving throw. He rolls a CRIT FAIL (AUGH! double death-save) and DIES. I'm freaking out at this point as I'm playing a bard that doesn't kill sentient creatures who has just successfully team-killed our paladin. We're all pretty shocked. The DM starts humming and hawing and finally says, "if I roll over 10, I'll tell you something." He rolls and says to the paladin, "You've got an inspiration die - do you want to use it to re-roll?" (luckily he doesn't roll another 1 and our ranger is able to stabilize him). DM plays the theme song from 'Baywatch'. AWESOME!! Needless to say, it was a memorable evening.
