TLDR: I have killed a PC in session one of my new campaign. The player still wants to play as this character. I need help coming up with an opportunity for resurrection that doesn't feel too convenient.
What has Been Discussed:
I've spoken with the player. They definitely want to keep playing their character, but they also don't want it to come cheap. The player will roll a new temp PC for the time being while the party tries to find someone who will resurrect their fallen friend. If they find someone, they will have to perform some sort of task. If they fail that task or take more than 10 days, the dead PC will be lost.
The Challenge:
I'm not exactly sure what a 9th+ level spell caster would need from a group of level threes that the caster couldn't take care of themselves.
Setting: The party is essentially marooned on an city of space pirates & ne'er do wells floating on rock & ice in an asteroid field. They've only just arrived, so I literally could plant just about anything here without it feeling too deus ex machina.
Where My Head Is Currently:
Right now, I'm thinking there's a vampire who wants something in a part of this asteroid city that due to science is always on the sunny side, & perhaps this is why the ice has melted & the water never stops swirling... I don't know if there's an item that was lost, or if there's a domed city under there, or what, but because of the sunlight & the running water, he's unable to get it himself. & maybe that's why he'd be willing to Raise Dead a party member for payment.
The Rub:
One of my PCs is literally a monster hunter. Having her ally with a Vampire will be a challenge to sell. It could be a fun roleplaying moment, or it could just go to h*ck. If I go the vampire route, I may need the thing that is under the water to be just as bad as a vampire in her eyes.
I'm always nervous about over- _and_ under-explaining these kinds of questions. So I'll leave it here, if you have follow up questions, please fire away. Thank you so much for your brain power & creativity & expertise.
