Hey guys,
So my ranger has been asking about any types of arrows that are more powerful, is there any rules for crafting different arrows or has anyone got any home brew about flaming arrows etc? I have heard of holy oil and poison being applied to arrow heads. Could someone tie old rags dipped in oil to the arrow head to set things or enemy on fire?

I know at least that there are +1 arrows in the DMG. You could definitely homebrew arrows that do different types of magic damage. Fire can light objects on fire, lightning is more effective against metal surfaces, ect ect. The way 5e handles setting things on fire is essentially the ability to set any unworn object on fire but once someone is wearing something it can't be. Granted those rules are primarily for magic fire damage.

I literally had one of my players want to make fire arrows tonight, just in case they'd be needed. I don't see anything wrong with them wishing to try it. Fire arrows have been used in battles in the real world, as had poison arrows, and I believe here is a rule regarding poison where the weapon must be used within 1 minute or the poison dries (ph 153). I'd say the same rule applies to fire arrows, but those arrows would not be reusable.
Basically, I'd reward their creativity and let them try, but within reason. Also, fire arrows may cause collateral damage.

That's interesting to note about wearables not being set a light, I think I'll just take into consideration common sense for that depending what the target is, an old Zombie wearing ragged clothing I'm happy to have go up in flames but most creatures or humanoids in armour I don't think should be ablaze after the initial damage.
I'll start thinking about places or NPCs that would have the means to make magic arrows. Any idea of pricing for this?
I've also heard of Arrows that have a better effect against specific creature types, this might be a good idea to match the arrow with the Rangers specific enemy type, thoughts?

Actually just expanding the arrow poisoning rule to other harmful alchemical substances such as alchists Fire kind of works right, just follow the rules for poisons but with different damage types!
You could tie the fact their using a special type of arrow into the fluff of why they get the bonus damage but I wouldn't increase it further as I think that might be a bit unbalanced...
