Beast Folk Thread
As I am not sure of the logistics of Aarakocra in the official settings, I had to improv some details of the Elemental plane of Air in my homebrew setting.
The primary humanoid race populating the plane of Air are the Aarakocra. The MM just portrays them as eagle-headed and winged humanoids with a devout sense of law....
This lack of diversity bored me. *Caste system engaged*
The highest caste is the ruling Lawful good caste of the Eagle Aarakocra, with a warrior culture similar to the Mayan's yet tempered by the knowledge of the Elders. The eagles are supported by other bird-folk that essentially make up their "commoners".
Falcons are a closely related warrior caste, but they prefer the fight and the skies over the logistics of ruling and creating rules.
Owl Aarakocra are generally neutral, and often respected as divine sages, shamans and clerics.
Pidgeon and Sparrow Aarakocra have a myriad of alignments, just as humans, but most are traders, businessbirds, bug-farmers or fruit-farmers.
Dark Aarakocra:
Buzzards with long necks and bald heads - scavangers that act as "highwaymen" or more appropriately "highskybirds"
and steal from lone travelers, killing if necessary.
Crows with dull black feathers, tendency to be thieves and minor law breakers.
Ravens with shiny black feathers. The rarest of the dark aarakocra. Even other dark aarakocra avoid ravens as they are bad-luck, synonymous with death itself. These aarakocra are silent, calm, calculating individuals that would have no qualms about killing you for its own gain. Some dabble with Necromancy.
The Dark and evil Aarakocra have taken in the Kenku, and the flightless Kenku exist as a cursed flightless bird-folk in the Plane of Air and must rely on the darker races of the Aarakocra to transport them to other floating islands.
I'm waiting until later to add fun tropical bird versions of Aarakocra. I really want them to meet a colorful toucan aarakocra named Sam...because come-on...that's hilarious.
