from what ive observed, there are many ways to dm and different approaches to telling exciting stories with your players! im the kind of person to do whatever it takes for everyone to have the maximum amount of fun, and i like to bend (or completely change) rules all the time! for example, im planning some stuff with my friends and ive decided to give all classes that are primarily spellcasters access to find familiar just because familiars are awesome! im kind of a chaotic good type >:3c
so what about you guys! how do you like to dm and if you had a "dm alignment" what would it be? :}

If I had to choose a DM "alignment" I'd say that I try to stay True Neutral, but often end up leaning on the chaotic side as a result of reacting to the party's style. Overall, telling an engaging story with the players means that I try to be flexible enough so that the players remain engaged, but try to be structured enough so that they still are challenged and don't always get what they want. They seem to enjoy it when the world pushes back as opposed to letting them frolic with abandon. For instance, we once played through a whole unplanned trial because one of the players decided to recklessly endanger an entire city rather than be patient and pass through a check point. It was totally unplanned, but one of the best sessions we've had in a while!

If I were to assign an alignment to my DM style it would have to be Chaotic Neutral. I am a primarily reactive and improvisational DM, with an emphasis on pushing my players into "unwinnable" situations (quotes because they still somehow often seem to win) and moral dilemmas.
My face to face group is on hiatus right now due to a combination of real life factors. It feels like I lost a tooth; I can't stop tonguing the gap in my life. This has led me to question what it is about RPGs that I seem to need so badly. I went 20 years without playing any TTRPGs and constantly felt something was lacking in my life. Starting a game felt like coming home again. WHY do these games matter so much to me?
The conclusion I've come to is that I'm not actually a "gamer". I'm not here for the game. I'm here for the stories. More than that, for collaborative storytelling. I'll always toss the rules aside in favor of a good story point. The game itself is only interesting to me in so far as it informs the style of story one can tell within its framework.

I am a Lawful Neutral DM, simply because the way my brain works enables me to quickly and easily memorize rules and guidelines. The rules can be obtuse and downright insane but I haven't played with a system so far that I can't at minimum figure out. This is not to say that I don't improvise, but I always have the general direction of things bouncing around my head. I will only too happily give the players enough rope to hang themselves though.

I find my experience changing very drastically with each different group of players. I have had groups that would hate to have their agency threatened and groups that would gladly sit back and enjoy the story.
So far, I find myself doing a lot of political intrigue. Overtime my initial plot threads have grown into massive, elaborate webs that are all interconnected, and my players seem to like it. Now I just have to keep everything consistent.

My general MO is to come up with a few specific plot points that are more or less inflexible, but everything else is done by the seat of my pants. That having been said, I also incorporate elements that have come up either in backstory or in-game.
