Suddenly got inspiration for a homebrew Bard spell when listening to "Ep 66: Bringing the Magic of Magic into D&D; If you guild it They Will Come"
For this, I was thinking you would have to ask your player to recite a Haiku for the spell to actually work to help promote RP.
Haiku Bomb (X Level Evocation or enchantment?) **I'm at work right now, I'll edit and look little details up once I'm home Components; Verbal, somatic Time: 1 action Range; 30 ft Duration; Instant
You recite an insulting haiku about the target to manipulate their thoughts and emotions. Depending on which line the target was most offended by, they will take different damage. The DM rolls a percentage die to determine which line the target disliked most and how many damage dice you roll.
(0-33%) line 1 offensive; 5d10 psychic damage (34-66%) line 2 offensive; 7d10 psychic damage (67-99%) line 3 offensive; 5d10 psychic damage 100% The haiku as a whole bears overwhelming truth for the target, crushing their morale 12d10 psychic damage

Ooooooh I like this, I really like this. Haiku's have always been my favorite form of poetry. They are short, sweet, right to the point, and because of that I feel like so much of the nonsense is stripped away from the words.
That being said, I love this spell as well. However this obviously needs to have a wisdom save attached to it or something. Min 5d10 psychic damage is to much to dole out for free. Passed that though, this feels like a pretty powerful spell. Something like I think deserves a 3rd lvl spell slot. Lastly, I think it would be great to build on what line they took offense to if the target of the attack is interacted with in the future. Such as "The hills are alive with death" may reference to the target a time he abandoned his comrades in some hills. Or maybe reawakens a paranoia the target has with the undead. Perhaps even both of those combined! Gives the players a chance to world build on accident xD

I keep closing the tab when my co-workers or boss walks by haha. Perhaps it would be better built like: Wis save 0-45% 5d10 psychic 1st line offended them 45-90% 7d10 psychic 1st 2 lines offended them or last 2 lines. DM's discretion 91-100% 12d10 psyhcic damage The entire Haiku made a significant impact on the target.

I like the previous version better, only because I like the rp aspect. Though thinking about it, it could still work this way....perhaps even better because you wouldn't be limited via lines but how hard they take it. Hmmmmm

I'm open to suggestions for the spell name as well. It currently gets the point across but it's kind of cheesy. The half-orc bard I'm homebrewing this spell for's name is Thokk Tonguepuncher so maybe something with his name in it?
"Haiku Humiliation" "Thokk's Tongue Punch"
or let the PC come up with a name for it by himself?
