The group decided collectively that we were going to go back to 2e. We got tired of Pathfinder with the near constant rules administrations and as a result of our general distaste for 4th edition, was not going to chance the purchase for 5th.
Now ten sessions in, we are finding everything we wanted in a game was in those old books. I would say that it's a case of pure nostalgia, but for three of the six this is their first time with 2e.
So here is to old school. Nothing wrong with those games at all, I sort of dug 4th. Yet all the same just because its old doesn't mean its not great.

I started with 2e in 1989, so I remember it well. I had alot of fun with 2nd, played in over 100 sessions and ran over 200 (we used to game twice a week in darksun, greyhawk, dragonlance & my homebrew) But I also remember everyone had houserules, eg - no one used demihuman level limits, people let humans multiclass, spellpoints, or used the skills & powers/spells & magic books, which were awesome. I can tell you there are things in 5th that are straight out of 2nd, like the way many items work, needing decent stat in a class you are multiclassing too, and there are no magic item shops like in 3rd. 4th had a much easier multiverse to handle, tied in the monsters to the universe well, and had consistently good artwork. just because its different does not mean its poor. I love 5th, it has the feel of 2nd, but balance of 3rd without the metagame min-max built in. If you want a squiz at 5th without buying, checkout - www.5esrd.com/

What setting did you guys go back to, or is it something homebrew. I would honestly love to play an old school campaign at some point because it is also where I started in the hobby. Glad to hear it is going well for you and I would love to hear more whenever you have more to share.

Im 25 years old but I started with 2nd Edition in my freshman year of high school. A friends parents were getting rid of their old books and I told her id take them immediately lol. From that point on, I was 14 then, I was in love with the game. I started creating my world which my players still play in to this day, though in 5th edition. I love 2nd edition, even bought all the reboot books when they came out. If I could get my players to humor me and do a 2nd edition campaign I would flip. Im also interested in hearing how your quest goes. Heres to old school

Seeing the younger folks playing 2E warms this old DM's heart, lemme tell you. I'll say, however, it's not the rules that matter... it's the roleplaying. That part isn't tied to any particular rule system. Mechanics matter less than people think (to a point, I understand it matters to some degree... don't blow me up).
