Good ep, maybe more for experienced DM's than new ones, but hey you don't learn if you don't try.
Why try out a non-canonical adventure?
1-you want to try out some steampunk stuff without risking destroying your campaign path
2-you want to throw players a curve ball, such as they all wake up as lycanthropes, mouse guardians or modrons-but not for a full length campaign
3-you want to get the pcs to play monsters in a dungeon and your heroes are invading-so they wake up in monsters bodies as the heroes yell For Pelor! and kick the first Dungeon Door in
4-you want to try out powerful items like mirror of opposition or deck of many things
5-there is a powerful caster/being who is toying with reality, so the side quest into non-canonical realm is actually an effect of the canon plot
6-there are some high level critters you've never used and want to let the players cut loose, so whatever damage they do you times it by D8 (which means they will destroy landscape not just monsters)
7-you want a theme night, eg halloween adventure or starwars quest
8-you want a one off game to get your players to gel more.
Ways to get into the non-canonical adventure
1-cleric of mischief deity puts dodgy herbs in the pcs food and they all go to trip out city
2-a deity wants to test the group to see if they are worthy for another quest
3-they step through a doorway which transports them to feywild/limbo/dream world
4-a genie is bored and just likes toying with mortals-the trigger is a horde of rustmonsters
5-one of the pcs has a birthday, they blow out the candles
6-the stars have aligned, cthulhu arrives and he demands dozens of chocolate calamari waffles
7-one of the pcs parents brings them a packed lunch-pickle sandwiches.
8-a bard plays/sings a tune and when he finishes the heroes are elsewhere
Ways to transition back to canonical adventure
1-they all wake up, safe around the campfire
2-they are falling through the air towards a lake
3-they all clink glasses in the tavern, so the entire adventure was a fraction of a second in real campaign time
4-one of the pcs is asleep on the ground and the others crawl out of their navel and grow larger as they move
5-describe the dragon that is attacking them, roll for initiative
6-they wake up in the bottom of a ship/mental asylum, and have to get home
7-heroes are at the circus where the ringmaster is selling a beastboy (werewolf)
8-they wake up in freshly dug graves with people about to fill the dirt in
for the quest itself you may want to use this -http://dungeonmasterblock.freeforums.net/thread/1151/april-fools-quest-generator
