Looking for opinions here.
5e makes feats optional. One can choose to either take stat increases or a feat every 4th level. I have one player who is exploring the feats, the rest are just taking the stat increases.
My player decided to try the feats after leveling up to 4th. I had him undo the stat increase and place a feat in its stead. Here is my question for y'all:
I would like to allow players to choose the stat increase or the feat. I am wondering if you guys think I should allow trading off every 4th level. That is; should the player be able to choose between the two options every forth level, or should I make them choose at 4th level and stick with their choice moving forward?
What say you?

I would definitely let them chose which they wanted every 4 levels. Don't make them stick to one particular path.

I feel that you almost have to allow them to choose between the two each time they are given the choice. The Fighter actually gets to make that decision every other level for stretches of their leveling career. I mention that you have to because there aren't a plethora of feats at this point, so removing the option of +2 in your primary stat could hurt the players, as there might not be anything left for them that is comparable to the stat increase. Secondly, some of the feats are essentially feats-lite. For example Athlete allows for the increase of STR or DEX by 1, prone to standing only uses 5 feet of movement, climbing doesn't halve your speed, and you can make a running jump after 5 feet instead of 10 feet. This is opposed to the other feats that completely replace the stat bumps. I allowed for my players to choose either one, and some went with them and others didn't.

Thanks for the feedback guys. Honestly, I was leaning toward making them choose. I haven't read much of the feats section of the PHB as we weren't using them. I was worried about exploitation and/or the PCs becoming overpowered due to possible synergies in feats and stat increases. You reassure me.

Friartook! That post made you a hero! WooT!
Yeah, I went back and forth on the idea for a bit, but it was mainly to see what characters look like at high level with only stat increases and no feats. I couldn't do that to my players though, haha.

Friartook! That post made you a hero! WooT! It took me waaay too long to figure out what this meant, lol. Yeah, four stars, catchin' up to you Gold-Dragon-Moneybags. I feel like a broke, free to play MMO newb, slowly grinding away to end game while all the play to play vets zoom through levels and gear.

It should be noted that the 5E rules actually say it's either/or at every 4 levels. Also, Feats are optional at the DMs discretion. I know some people use them, some don't. Up to you.
