Hammer of Greenwood
Magic Warhammer, Legendary, +1 bonus to attack and damage rolls while unattuned. Additional features only available while attuned.
This warhammer has a large, flat head shaped to resemble a tome atop an oddly thin, flat haft. Embossed on the back of the head is the face of a man, bearded and wise. Legends say the face resembles the "Master of the Green Wood," which has long been shortened to "Mister Greenwood." When this hammer strikes, it leaves behind a single rune for a time, with a new rune for each strike. Some say if you could record all the runes they would tell a grand epic tale, but perhaps only Mister Greenwood would know for sure.
Properties (5E):
The Hammer of Greenwood is a sentient magical warhammer that requires attunement to use its special abilities. However, the Hammer of Greenwood has special requirements for attunement that can be revealed with an Identify spell or by handling the Hammer during a short rest:
To attune with the Hammer of Greenwood, you must tell a story at the start of a long rest. During the story, the face on the back of the Hammer will change expressions as appropriate to the mood of the story. The Hammer of Greenwood will remain attuned only until the start of the next long rest, at which time you may perform the attunement process again.
[Fun flavor: DM may require the player to either tell a story in character or make a Charisma check to attune. If the player decides to continue the same story they began on the previous day, lower the difficulty.]
Properties while attuned:
While attuned, the Hammer of Greenwood grants a +3 bonus to attack and damage rolls made with this weapon. Wizards, bards, characters with the "Entertainer" background or any sort of performance skill are considered proficient with this weapon while they are attuned to it.
Attuned characters may use any of the following abilities:
[Additional fun flavor: If using the optional "fun flavor" for attunement, the DM may also increase difficulty for regaining attunement if attunement is lost due to power use, require the weilder to continue the previous story, or both.]
Legend of the Hammer of Greenwood:
It is said that the original owner of the Hammer of Greenwood was Tai Priteur, adventurer of a bygone age. Under Mister Greenwood's direction, Tai Priteur drafted a thousand stories by pounding the hammer to paper. Through this act Priteur became known as a Wordsmith, though he claimed that it was only through the guiding hand of Mister Greenwood that the stories came about, and all credit should go to him.
Today, long past the era of Tai Priteur, the Hammer of Greenwood continues its original mission, crafting stories for the enjoyment of the world. Some say that when the stories end the world will end; some claim that when a story is finished a new world is created and the Hammer of Greenwood starts anew, crafting another new world. Opposing groups seek to either seal or use the Hammer of Greenwood based on these beliefs.

Attuned characters may use any of the following abilities:
- "Inspiring Word": As a bonus action, you can start a new word. You gain Inspiration after completing 2d4 successful strikes, completing a word with the runes. This cannot grant inspiration if you already have it. This ability cannot be used again until the end of the next short or long rest.
- "Thought-Provoking Words": As a bonus action, the you can request stronger words from the Hammer, ignoring all resistances and dealing an additional 2d10 psychic damage to targets who understand at least one language. These effects end at the start of the next short or long rest, as does attunement with the Hammer. You cannot attune to the Hammer again until the start of your next long rest, as per the special rules for attunement with the Hammer of Greenwood.
- "Your Story Has Not Ended": As an action, you may cast Revivify without expending material components. Casting Revivify in this way ends attunement with the Hammer of Greenwood, and you may not attune to the Hammer again until the start of your next long rest, as per the special rules for attunement with the Hammer of Greenwood.
